Anyone ever look for thier boat using the Google Earth program? Since I have only had my boat for a year, it does not show up at either marina where it was slipped. It might be in the photo of Dana Point, but I wouldn't know where to look. How about you? If you've had your boat in your marina (or back yard, or boat yard) when the satellite photo was taken, do you see it?

Remember Goggle Earth photos are...

Goggle earth photos aren't real time as I originally thought. When a guy told me the photos were about 3 years old, it was kind of like hearing that Santa doesn't exist for the first time. When I goggle my house, I see my old car sitting out there, not the ones I own now. There isn't a boat where my boat is currently moored in Horseshoe bay. So sorry to say, Santa is Coke and goggle earth is not current.

Even better is Virtual Earth

You should try Microsoft's Virtual Earth... I think it's much better than Google because you can click and get a 360 degree look. Dates are different than Google's and Terra. I was really impressed with the shot of my house.

Lucky timing

I must have been lucky. I have only had my boat for a year but the satellite must have made a pass sometime this winter because it does show, although fuzzy with only 10m resolution. BTW you can rotate Google earth 360 and vertically.

Well,,,,

We built our home eleven years ago. Microsoft doesn't show it. Only black and white woods.

WOW! great link

Thanks John, for the great tip about Microsoft Virtual Earth. It's got great resolution. I can clearly see my house and the upgrades we did several years ago. I'd say the shot is at least 4 years old though, but still - I'm VERY impressed with the resolution. You're right, MUCH better than Google Earth.

here's the thing

From what I understand, these pictures are updated dependant on the population density and development relative to the greater geographic area. It's not unheard of for "Fred" to get a high res taxpayer photo of his backyard last weekend, while his cousin "Bob" 50 miles away gets a mottled black and white shot from 10,000 feet in 1963. OK, so I embellish.

I love it!

I've found my slip, but the photo is pre-my occupancy. I've also found all the houses I've lived in, my schools, hiding places, and...oh, never mind!

I found my slip

and it looks like it's not too old because it looks like my boat is there. It's awesome. Thanks all. A great way to plan a sailing trip.

not all

areas apear to be close to up to date, did some poking around, and my friends house, roughly 6 years old, is a feild of trees and brush. http://www.flashearth.com/ has google and live earth together. Sadly, I must not live in an interesting enough place to have detailed pics of my boat! ken.

Interesting thing about the views

Just looking at the Google earth. The states of Indiana, New Jersey and Massachusetts all have higher resolution images than the rest of the country. Most areas are just major cities. Wonder how much that cost them. Looking at my house the picture is over four years old. It shows my H260 in the driveway and the last time it was there was Sept of 2002. Jim S/V Java

I couldn't get

MS Virtual Earth to give me a photo, only a line drawing map. There was no option for satellite or aerial view. Not important.

virtual earth

is odd for some reason, first time I looked at it, that was all I could get, line drawings, next time I was able to get the 'photo view' both google and virtual have fair coverage, google is easier to use Fun to look around on, but being so out of date, I don't think there's a whole lot of real use for it, just another book on the shelf after a while. Now if it were current that would be a lot of fun. Ken.

Goggle Earth sees my boat

Yes, I can see my boat via goggle earth @ my marina. Not too clear but it gets the message across.
