Try the Salt Ponds Marina in Hampton....It is pretty descent and has some really nice boats there.

There are a few other marinas in that area that are pretty descent as well. That area has a lot of good sailing!

If you want to be near a specific area or within a certain distance of the open bay, I would highly recommend you use ACTIVECAPTAIN.com to look at what facilities are near where you want to be. Many will have reviews and information on depths and such.

On a recent delivery trip, we used the Tidewater Yacht Marina, and it was quite nice. Good facilities, a restaurant, fairly close to stores and such.

Your post states ". .around Virginia Beach". Does that mean within walking, cycling, or taxi distance? I used to live there and cannot remember sailboats anywhere close. The city is on the ocean but there is one inlet on the south side of town. You could call this marina on Rudee's inlet to ask( http://www.rudeesmarina.com/ ). But I don't know if sailboats can get in that inlet.

You will have to go inside the bay entrance to the Norfolk- Hampton Roads area. A quick look at chart number 12221 will tell the whole story.

In this neck of the woods out in Jamesport and other places on Peconic Bay there are marinas with plenty of water that will NOT allow more than a few sailboats as they want the income from the fuel sales there powerboat slip renters bring in

Ken,

Almost all of the marinas in Hampton Roads (not made inaccessible by bridges) are sailboat friendly.
In addition to Salt Ponds in Hampton there are at least (approx)
3 more in Hampton (+ Hampton Yacht Club... sailboat race fleet)
6 more in Norfolk (at Willoughby, Little Creek... both have weekly , in season, sailboat race fleets) (+ Norfolk Yacht Club and Waterside)
5 more in Portsmouth
3 Military marinas (for active duty and retired)
Virginia Beach, itself, has no marinas that are actually accessible to (larger) sailboats, (Lynnhaven Inlet and Rudy Inlet marina(s) are blocked to all but the smallest sailboats by bridges.
You might wish to look at ....

to view some of the marinas in Hampton Roads...
For reference...I have been at Bay Point Marina (Little Creek) in Norfolk for many years.

Well, let me add my 2 cents too. For a boat with your 6ft plus draft, in reality you're going to be limited in marina choices. I used to keep my H386 at Salt Ponds for a number of years, however, the entrance channel is infamous for shoaling closed every few years. The cityof Hampton doesn't stay on top of it either. Best water at High tide maybe, maybe 7'6", and at low less than 5'. That's after a recent dredging, then it slowly deteriorates. To berth at some of the yacht clubs on a permanent basis will require membership and someone to sponsor you in. Not a quick solution, but doable with some time. Willoughby marina is accessable inside Hampton Roads and generally has good water and floating docks. Drawback is access along conjested I-64, even on weekends. Traffic is always a problem in this area of I-64. But it's a friendly marina - I used to charter out of there. Rudee inlet is a non-starter. Shoaling and entrance from the exposed Atlantic. Mostly sports fishing boats there. Inside the Chesapeake Bay bridge-tunnel is Litttle Creek with a number of marinas (as stated above). Good marinas, lots to do, boater friendly there. Nice weekend destination trip. It's also close to Norfolk and VA Beach areas. There's a few OK marinas inside Elizabeth River, but you'll have to deal with a lot of commercial and large ship traffic (to include the Navy's Atlantic fleet). There's not a lot of choices, as many marinas are quite full, especially the better ones. I moved up the York River four years ago as I reside on the Hampton Roads Peninsula. Still takes me over an hour to reach the main Chesa. Bay area, but I found a good deal and I'm sticking with it. Good luck on your search.

Thanks for all the input! I found Bay Point Marina/Little Creek. Website says bay point is the sailing one. Anyone have local knowledge??

http://www.littlecreekmarina.com/

Well, yes .. since I've kept my boat there since '01, I can tell you that Bay Point is a very nice marina, and as Ron says it's location puts you right out onto the Bay in a matter of a few minutes.
There are currently slips available, and because of the economy, you may be able to negotiate the slip rental, not only at Bay Point, but at most of the marinas owned by Vinings Group.

FYI...My Uncle lives in the Salt Ponds and keeps his C&C 32 there. It is a deeper draft and he has no problem getting in and out (they just did the channel recently). It does sometimes get some shoaling, but in the past few years Hampton has been staying on top of it.

The Marinas in Norfolk are nice.

A work of caution. If you keep to the southern bay your draft shouldn't be too bad but it will keep you out of some of the other areas of the bay. I wouldn't attempt going into Smith Island and watch your charts also.

If you make a trip up north Deltaville is a good day's sail from Hampton/Norfolk. Watch your weather window when you cross between Smith Point and Point Lookout (mouth of the Potomac River) as that area can be really bad in rough weather. The Chesapeake Bay's waves tend to be steep and when they are with the wind but against the tide they can be really brutal.

Last week I looked at Willougby, Baypoint, and Vinny's Landing for you H40, which also draws 6'4". I liked Vinny's the best, mainly because they had garden plots for liveaboards.

Buck420 - 3 military? which bases other then Little Creek??

KandD,
Yes, Vinnings Marina is nice and the restaurant there, Surf Rider, is also good. If you were looking for my boat at Bay Point, I won't be back till early April.
Military marinas around Hampton Roads.... in addition to the one at Little Creek, there is one at NOB, Norfolk, and another at Ft Story in Hampton. I'm not sure what the status of the Ft Story marina will be when the base closes.

Re: Marinas

Scuttlebutt (from friend who keeps his boat there) is that the marina at ft. story will go to MWR (morale welfare recreation) at Langley and therefore remain open once the land reverts to the city.
