I looked at the cost to buy a newer 40' footish sailboat. Too rich for my blood. Any suggestions on some older vessels that I may consider? How about a used one from one of those charter companies? I'm looking to cruise and liveaboard for a while. Does the cost of fixing up a used outweigh the cost of buying a newer model? I don't think that would be an easy question to answer, based on alot of unknowns about the actual condition of an old boat. I just want a good quality boat that will also be in demand when I am done with it. Anyways, comments would help my search. Merry Christmas All!

'New and Improved'?
The two biggest questions you have to answer for yourself are: How much am I willing to spend, and How much 'reconditioning/upgrading' work can I do myself. Once you've settled that in your mind, there are a lot of options to choose from. Since I have a Pearson I'm extremely happy with now, when I move up in a couple of years, I'll look at them first. Others I'd consider are Tartan, Ericson, Bayfield,Islander. All are 'older' boats, but I've sailed with friends who have them. It's all a matter of how sound the hull and rig is....going again back to costs and work involved.

While I have no direct experience, you might want to check on the Beneteau board. It seems to me there were a number of people who were both dissatisfied with the condition and maintenance of charter boats and who felt they were inferior to the same base model in quality and options.

Older Freedom 40
Ever looked at a Freedom 40, like about an '84 model? Not the new 40/40 but the old pirate looking 40 Cat/Ketch. Two big fully batten mains on unstayed mast and doesn't draft a whole lot. Lots of boat for little maintenance. Popular in New England waters I hear.

Mike C's list is good. As a Pearson 34 owner I am prejudiced, but they are well built, no clorox bottle, and generally fetch less $$ than Sabre, Tartan, etc because of lower sex appeal. The P-34 is a great sailing boat. They seem to hold their value too.
