What the hell about the Ericson 30?

I'm mad as hell, no Ericsons? Sheesh, this is rigged. Thank you.

The number of boats built tell the story

I think I know why Hunter 30's, Catalina 30's, and Catalina 27's won for "coastal cruisers"...there were a zillion of them made, and half a zillion owners responded. There weren't as many boats produced for those boats that I would consider coastal cruising in, hence not as many votes. Don't you agree??? MInd you these are decent boats, but not the best.

If you don't like your BOTY; pick another!!

Of course, you can also let others do the picking for you.... ;~{ Either way, you get what you deserve! Flying Dutchman "Rivendel II" (our BOTY for 12 years straight; and counting)

What??? A Pearson in 3rd place? NOT! How about a Pearson Thoroughbred 33? (Course I think that there were only a few built...)

M26X better than Nor'Sea27?

Cant belive my eyes!!!! Before buying Nor'Sea27 I chartered M26X in Belize and Port Charlotte. M26X is mere plastic soap holder in comparason to NS27. IN EVERY ASPECT! If you judge quality by the price I can suggest some more.. Ziggy

26X out the wazoo

Hey Ziggy, Assuming the Nor'sea 27 is better built and actually worth 3 times the price of a 26X, it's not nearly as versatile. The NS27 is too heavy for my tow vehicle. It requires too much water to launch at my neighborhood boat launch (With the 26X you can float on a heavy dew!) You can have more quality sailing time by motoring to your favorite sailing spots (barrier islands in my case). Over 5000 26Xs have been sold in the past 7 years (compare to NS27). A used 26X will sell for about the same price as a new one. Just my personal observations. Happy sails _/), MArk

I figured part of this out

I was puzzeled by the results myself... So, re-read the article in "This Old Boat" From what I gather the boats that were chosen were the ones reviewed by "Old Boat Magazine" in the past year(?). That is why many boat brands were left off. The part I don't get is who voted? What was their criteria? But, who cares? I like my Old Boat and that is what matters to me most. Tanzer 22'

Tanzer 22' should be on the list for trailerable! I know it got at least one vote! If anyone has good/bad data on the 1989 Hunter 28, please contact me. I am about to spend 25k on one soon. Happy Sails. mwolf7@visteon.com

How this happened and what it all means

The Good Ol' Boat of the Year Awards -- People's Choice division -- is really just like the People's Choice Awards on TV. Voting took place in October 2002 on all six SailboatOwners.com web sites. Any site user could vote, for any boat ever built. One could argue that the results show the most popular votes, not necessarily the best boats.... but then, how do you define "best?" Most popular would have some place in that definition. In the same January '03 issue of GOB mangazine the experts make their picks and predictably, the results are quite different.

So Phil what was the outcome of the Jan '03 GOB

That the experts made for their picks? I'd like to see that.

Good Old Boat of the Year-Excellent Satire!!

I have a feeling that many of us haven't read the article. I have a subscription to Good Old Boat and got my issue before Christmas. Read it while in the car on the way from NW Ohio to South Carolina to visit my retired brother who now lives in a WARM!! place;-) It is intended to be read tongue-in-cheek, I believe. There is a great deal of fun poked at the reviews in other boating rags and the "experts" poke a great deal of fun at themselves. In the end, all of the reviewers agreed that they couldn't agree on much of anything. It is good fun aimed at those who take these reviews too seriously. Bottom line for the First annual GOBOTY is that we should all enjoy our GOBs. Let's all gird our loins and look for some real controversy... like cold beer brewed locally in our favorite micro-brewery versus fresh-brewed morning coffee as a nautical refreshment.

You'll have to address that question to Good Old Boat. And see Tom's post -- the whole article is highly entertaining!

R

Rod Johnson,

Think trailering!

Although the NorSea 27 had huge quality problems as well as sales tactics bordering on fraud towards the end, (a VERY sad end to a fine boat!) she is still (IMHO) a much better boat. The only explanation that I can see for the Mac 26X beating the NorSea 27 is that between the two, the Mac is Tremendously more trailerable! I'd much rather sail the NorSea 27, but for TRAILERING you can't compare them. The NS 27 weighs in at over 8,000# not including trailer and gear, the Mac 26 weighs about 3,00# including trailer, gear and 50hp outboard. The NorSea is a "trailer-transportable" boat, designed originally to allow her owners to trail to Baja California to cruise, rather than sail all the way. Both boats have their place, if you want to sail to far off places, but don't have the time to sail the whole way, buy the NorSea. If you want a boat that you can store in your driveway, and easily launch for an evening sail, or a daysail, buy the Mac.

Affordability & Availability

People have stated that the winners aren't the best boats. However, If you look at what they have done for your average sailor maybe they are. Take the Catalina 30 IE, Is there an other boat that offers so much for the money? They are well built, easy to care for, great availibility of parts, excellant customer service, Larger than most 30's interiors, and easy and forgiving boat to sail. They're not in the sailboat hall of fame for nothing. Yes, I am the proud owner of a C-30.

It seems that this article or subject turns out to be " Boats most commonly found thruout the U.S." and not "Good Ol'Boat".
