Good News Bad News

Well good news: I got to go sailing for 4 days week before Labor Day weekend.
Bad news: Got to my boat and someone got in and stole my dingy which was rolled up inside. I just bought this spring
Good News: They left the floor boards the seat the ores and the air valves! They also left a half gallon of whiskey and a bottle of Baily's, which they took out of the cabinet and the GPS sitting on the counter.
Bad news: They took a $120 bait casting reel my wife bought me for my b-day
Good news: They left the $35 fishing pole it was attached to.
Bad news: Wife and her friend came with me (Not the bad news) along with 3 puppies and a dog. And now no way to get them to shore.
Bad news: Didn't get to put sails up the whole time and it rained a lot. However this was a meat run as the salmon were running.
Good news we did catch 18 salmon.
Good news: Did find a place where the gravel was soft enough I felt comfy to beach and let the dogs run for a bit.
Bad news: Loaded up the boat after the run 4 dogs me and turned around and to fish some more. we trolled for about 15 minutes and the wife started to feed the dogs left over pork chops. 1 dog 2 dogs 3 dogs Gracy GRACY!!!! WHERES GRACY!!!!!!! Oh god Dog overboard. The wife's favorite puppy gone!!!!!!! wife was going nuts I turned the boat around punched the throttle cut the fishing line ($50 dollars worth of fishing gear.) HAd the GPS on followed the course back. No Gracy Got around the point 10 minutes later where were beached. no Gracy I kept going running out of water no Gracy turn around. Now what????
Good news: Made one last turn back "GRACY!!!" Seen something, is that a rock? Wait no no it's Gracy!!!!!! Go back to beach the boat, the wife still In a panick her friend holding her. I am at the helm next thing I know the wife is over the pulpit and into the water, 40 degree water mind you. Hit reverse so don't run her over, watch her glasses go off her face. Well not all that is good news I guess.
More good news: Well Gracy was fine. I am sure she was a little panicked,but no worse for wear. Searched the water found wife's glasses and got them with a fishing pole.Well we got back to the harbor after about 2 hours return trip. And last time had all the dogs with us.
Bad news: LAst day wife stayed back with the dogs, her friend and I went back out and only caught 4 more fish.
Well I am sure more things went good and bad on the trip. There was seldom a boring time. Like had a bear in our camp. Found lots of left behind fire wood for the taking had a couple nice fires (It's hard finding fire would in a rain forest) And I did go back Memorial weekend. Just me and the dog. Left the puppies with wife's friend.
Caught another 8 salmon. Found a couple more spots to beach to run the dog. But none are very good. Miss that dingy!!!! The auto helm went out again. It never worked right since they fixed it last year they better fix it for free!!!!! Well packed the boat up to tow her home. Its a long 380 miles towing that thing. Stopped at a place I know of to run the dog. Place for her to swim,not that she really swims just lays in it to cool down. Well it's right about the half way point home and the dog managed to find a Porcupine Comes running out of the trees with a mouth full of quills. We were about half a mile walk to the truck. She was going nuts, bleeding pawing at her mouth,jumping around. Got some pliers at the truck and tried to get them out. She would have no part of that. Manage to get two out. She trashed my truck jumping around for like an hour as I drove back. She calmed down for the last 2 hours. Well $450 later she was quill free.
Well I guess the worst news is the boat is sitting in my yard 380 miles from water. I only got to use her 4 times this year Did have some great sailing days,Memorial weekend and 4th of July weekend. Well anyone from Alaska read this and have a spare dingy let me know. Greg

Wow Greg, this reads like fiction! Maybe you just woke up from a bad dream? Where was the boat when it was broken into? I thought you kept the boat on a trailer at home. And three dogs on a 25-footer!? Must have been the admiral's idea.

That is why when the kids grew up and moved out so did the pets and now the kids all have pets but we sure don't and never will on our boat for sure,love them darn pets that other people have.
Sure sounds like you were not bored and hope you find a new dinghy soon and you gotta get out on that boat more.
My boat on the hard while I nurse my shoulder surgery and boy I miss sailing and Kayaking and my wife needs to get out more away from me going nuts.

wow--- cant be fiction, as fiction is about stuff that doesnt happen, and truth is way stranger than fiction.....
i keep my cat on a leash--er, tether--when we are at dock and he is outside---also in heavy seas.
i went to pizza last night and forgot to tie off bitter end..oooops....
got back 2 hours later to find cat was merely sitting by companionway waiting for me to to FIX my mistake--he is such a good bubba--didnt even try to leave boat---knew his safety line was malfunctioning and just waited for me. yes he got treats....
losing a favored critter is like losing a kid. scary thought.

Bad News: Well, that beats MY Capt'n's Logs!!!!!! Darn! Outdone!!!! What can out do a dog thrown overboard into bone chilling water then tangling with dangerous varmints???? Game ON!

Good News: Wait . . . most of my misadventures are due to my OWN incompetence! We're good!

Too bad about the dog. It sucks to be broken into and loose your stuff. I was burglarized 4 times when I lived in Las Vegas. It ain't fun, but the insurance company should cover it. But to see your pup like that. That rots! She'll be fine though.

I kept the boat in dry dock at the harbor. 380 miles and two mountain passes is to much to tow. Insurance I have don't cover theft unless it is the whole boat. Am watching crageslist.

Hope the dog learned something. One of mine was bitten by a Western diamondback a few weeks ago, right on his snout. Blood and commotion everywhere, but it was a dry bite.
And here I thought he was snake-smart...

380mi commute to the boat to sail in 40degree water with 3 dogs and crew(any of which readily jump overboard) on a 25' boat, watching for Bears, theives and Porcupines on the beach....now that's a seriously committed sailor(or at least a fun tale).

OMG I live the opposite extreme (no kids, no dogs, warm water, 30min commute, no bears, never need MOB drill), just boring ol' sailing in the tropics but your story is absolutely great.

I'm with Nick. Kids grown up and no more pets. Life is too short to be looking for a spot for a dog to poop. I do love dogs though, other peoples that is.

If you could somehow get the bear and porcupine to guard the boat then you wouldn't have any more problems with the burglars.

My little dog has sailed around the world with me. He makes watches more enjoyable and is a joy to have aboard. He got into a porcupine up in Maine once, had about 150 quills in his face, mouth, nose and tongue. I laid him on a table, put a stick in his mouth and spent 2 hours pulling quills out of him. He never complained. He is a Jack Russel Terrie, sails with me and flys with me. A person could not ask for a better shipmate or friend. He is 17 now, but still travels with me at sea and in the air. He is always ready to go on a new adventure. He is my friend.
