Just bought a catalina 36 foot sailboat and am searching for a good, reliable, and reasonable (one can only hope) mechanic for my boat? Anyone care to recommend?

John, in many cases "boat mechanic" can be considered an oxymoron. The good ones are few and hard to find. Good luck. I suggest you get acquainted with the guys at the C36 Association website and their message board/forum www.c36ia.org They'll be a great help to you. We share identical systems and engines, so fell free to poke around our website, too: www.c34ia.org. We have a tech wiki going, too, which is a great source of information on electrical and mechanical systems.

Congratulations on your new boat and welcome to the forum.

Re: e greenwich mechanic

I think most of us find out that the most reliable and reasonable mechanic is ourself. Good? Well the only way to become good is to roll up your sleeves and get to work. A couple of good books and good advice from this site go a long way.

I was quite daunted by dealing with a diesel for the first time, but took the approach that the only mechanic I was likely to find if I broke down at sea would be me and I wasn't going to get better by hiring a mechanic. Diesels are remarkably reliable and some general knowledge of the care, feeding and troubleshooting goes a long way, in my opinion.

Can't disagree with what has already been said but if you do really need a mechanic, I would recommend a couple of guys at the Brewer yard in Cowesett, Robby being the most experienced. Assuming "reasonable"is a euphemism for cheap, they are not, however, they will let you watch and explain things essentially teaching you what you need to know and that in itself has great value.
