Good GPS update

With all of the new improvements in GLONASS, Galileo, and the present GPS (GNSS), I can foresee a bunch of new instrumentation for boats. In addition to improved accuracy and reliability for navigation, how about an absolute compass? Then you can add really accurate digital attitude measurement. GPS based safety devices could alert you if someone falls overboard and easily direct the crew back to the MOB. Beats a floating flag on a pole any day. Then there is that killer app - the GPS based wireless fence. Only problem is all of those new acronyms to keep up with...

I wonder if Europe, and the Russians will provide

their service for free to the world like the US does...or will they want $.

Yes

GLONASS and Galileo are already committed to providing free GPS services for the public specification, though not the military spec. Just like the US. Most in Europe don't see the need for these separate systems but Navies all round the world insist upon their independence. At a recent lecture I asked the Royal Navy's Fleet Chief Communications Officer ( the top man) if we were anticipating a war with America?
