Our yacht club held our regatta today with the state Snipe races. Beautiful day. 70 degree air temp, 10 - 16 kts, and 60 degree water temp. I was supposed to be on the committee boat but one of our members needed a crew. This is his third year racing this event and has yet to finish a race. I borrowed a wet suit and went out with him. We put it over during practice and righted it.

1st race we dumped it once, righted it and still finished 10th out of 15. His first ever finish, he was hooting and hollering more than the winners. Toward the end the main sheet block came completely off the bottom of the boat.

2nd race the winds really picked up and sailing it without a main sheet block and the feet strap for hanging out was a chore and then the Jib window blew out. We decided enough things had failed and took a tow back in.

Even with the problems and never had sailed together on a very squirrelly boat we had a lot of fun. I am a little sunburned and all of my upper body muscles are sore.

I went and checked on my boat this weekend. Friday afternoon the lake was still covered with ice. Saturday the wind came up and 20+ knots of wind from the north east broke up the ice into chunks along the shore. Spring is still not here but at least you can’t walk across the lake anymore.

I lived in Spokane Washington while stationed in the Air Force. Once the spring thaw started, it was time to celebrate. You can never get all the little projects done that has been procrastinated over the winter...

Looks on the dining room table at the new companionway door that just became a pressing project that could have been done three months ago...

Snipe memories

That reminds me of my first snipe regatta in 1970... what a disaster! Snipe sailing is for the young, or those that think they are. Now, comfort, air conditioning and non hiking out sailing is for me.:)

I enjoy it all. I much prefer my O'Day 25 but I also have a 5 year old that I want to get into sailing. A club member gave me a Johnson Scow for him to learn with. After playing with that at the club, a few Snipe owners asked if I would sail with them. It is a lot of fun as long as you do not mind swimming once in a while.

It is amazing how much money people will spend on a Snipe. :eek:

Hi Dave,

I just saw the pictures of your refit of "Recess" and thought you did a great job. I also had a O'Day 25 (1978) named "Recess" and it remains my favorite boat. I also had a Hobie 16 before that. I currently have a Catalina 27 and sail out of Ft. Myers Beach. I am a retired teacher from Michigan and a former "hippie." Weird!

Thank you for the compliment. I have been enjoying tinkering and fixing her almost as much as sailing. It is nice after a day of fourth graders to come home and work on something for the boat. It is a great unwind. That is awesome we both had the same boat with the same name. With a name like "Recess", you have to know it is a teacher or judge.

Your comment brings back such memories. I passed the fifty year mark of sailing and fondly remember my first sail at Catalina Island Boys Camp, aboard a Snipe. I had no idea they were still around. That's great. Thanks for the memories.

We used to take the fraternity boys from the big city Snipe hunting. Fifty years ago I didn't know the Snipe was a sailboat. But looks like great fun. At 68 I still love hanging out of my Highlander.

I have a 1939 Snipe built in a local boat yard, that was in existance from 1931-40. we're hoping to get out and sail this summer and take it to a Snipe Regatta on Seneca Lake in July
