Earlier this year, I wanted to make a 5 day sail to the Mississippi coast, but had to cancel due to bad weather. Last week I finally made the trip after making a quick/last minute decision to go after seeing that the weather window would be good.

I quickly packed food for 5 days, topped off my water, fuel and propane tanks and departed Saturday. Here's how my trip went:

Saturday
12n - 5pm
Left Mandeville, LA. on Lake Pontchartrain, sailed thru the Hwy 11 Bridge, under the I-10 bridge and then to the Hwy 90 Bridge. Once thru, I turned east into the Rigolets Marina. In the parking lot, at the boat ramp, is a store with ice, food and supplies.

Sunday
9am - 5pm
Departed the marina and transited the Rigolets, where I saw my first dolphin heading towards me. I passed thru the CSX RR Bridge and entered the Mississippi Sound. I then turned east and followed the coast to Long Beach Harbor. Along the way, I saw more dolphins as I passed Bay St. Louis and had to watch the commercial barge traffic and keep clear.

I arrived Long Beach Harbor and after calling the Harbor master on my cell phone, he guided me into any slip I wanted. The price is $1/ft, cash only. Since I didn't have any cash, he lent me his truck and let me take it to the nearby ATM. The facilities has power, water, showers, ice and bathrooms. Across the street is Burger King, McDonald's and IHOP.

Monday
9am - 11am
Departed and headed to Ship Island. I arrived at the pier on the north side, and docked at the end where tourist boats dock. There was a BP contracted tour boat there, contracted to carry oil-spill cleanup crews to the island. I visited with the crew and walked around the island. On the south shore, the facilities include showers (inside and outside), bathrooms, pavilions with picnic tables and a snack bar with ice, drinks, foods, etc. As the only tourist on the island, I walked on the deserted beaches.

No one is allowed to be on the island or docked at the pier after sunset, so after my walk, I returned to my boat and move to the west, along the north shore. I anchored in feet of water, 1/2 way from pier to the western tip of the island. The spot was about 100 yds from shore, as it's very shallow on the north side. I saw everybody else depart the island and afterwards, was the only person there. I used my bbq pit to cook some hamburgers and enjoyed a hot dinner and Corona.

The weather the entire day and night was 20+ kt winds from the south and choppy seas, however on the north side, in the lee of the island, the winds were strong, but the waters were smooth and calm. The sunset was awesome and I enjoyed my hot meal and corona! Overnight, my 90 feet of rode and Fortress anchor held firm, but I wasn't able to sleep from the wind's howling.

Tuesday
9am - 8pm
Time to start my long return home. The weather was still 25 kt winds from the south and 3-4 ft seas. I weighed anchor, and started sailing west, north of Cat Island, then along the coast for 8 long hours back to the Rigolets.

About 6pm, due to the rough weather, I got out of the rough seas a little earlier by entering the Pearl River, instead of the Rigolets. Passed thru the small RR bridge and followed it to the Rigolets, where it turned dark. I sailed the last 90 min in the dark, back to the Rigolets Marina, arriving at 8pm. Exhausted, I hooked up my power cable, turned on my A/C, ate a sandwich and went to sleep.

Wednesday
10am - 3pm
I ate breakfast at the boat ramp store, then got underway in steady strong 15kt winds at 5-6 kts of speed. I rocketed under the Hwy 90 bridge, the I-10 bridge and then thru the Hwy 11 bridge. Once past Slidell and off Lacombe, the wind died and suddenly a US Coast Guard RIB was alongside for a courtesy inspection. After 30min of going thru my whole boat, I passed with no issues or deficiencies and got back underway. With no wind, I furled the sails and motored back to Mandeville. Just as I entered the breakwater, a heavy rain squall hit and soaked everything. As the rain stopped, I made it back to the dock and began cleaning and unloading my gear.

A terrific trip with lots to see, awesome sunsets, dolphins, windy weather, night sailing and rough weather sailing that all improved my skills.

Nice. Being from Ohio I had to use Yahoo Maps to follow your very interesting route. Funny how the winds always build when it is time to return.

Great writeup. I love that trip. You pass our slip everytime you go out. Kat's Meow. How was the depth from Pearl entrance back to Rigolettes? The CSX bridge was broke one time and we thought about trying that route. We wound up just anchoring at rabbit island till it was fixed.

Just made that same trip to the Coast last month!

When originally moving the boat from Mandeville to the Coast to its new home.

It was a lot of fun, however I was wondering where that east inlet went while waiting about 2 hours for the train bridge to open-- knowledge for next time!

We ended making the last leg east across the Sound during the night, which was fun with no moon--could see the Milky Way overhead at times.

Two weekends ago we went sailing in the Sound again and ran across no less than 4 pods of dolphins escorting us as we zig-zagged about the Sound. My wife and kids were amazed by them swimming with us and so close! Gonna be a cold weekend this weekend, so we may wait until the following weekend to get out again.

Zee, you do have the homesick blues for Lake Pontchartrain, don't you!

Hey Chuck,
The depth in the Pearl River bypass was fine. I was so glad that I decided to exit the MS Sound early due to the weather and take it back to Slidell. With a south wind, I actually continued to sail it and the up the Rigolets back to Slidell. One time, I was not watching my way and got a little to clode to the banks and my keel hit some mud and kinda went aground for about 15 seconds, but I draw 5'3" and I was not staying to the middle.

Morgan 382 Mandeville, LA
I bought my previous boat (Hunter 27) in Longbeach and sailed it to Madisonville. It was quite a trip. We got caught in a microburst with about 6 foot seas and 60+ mph winds in the sound south of Waveland. I ended up anchoring at the mouth of the Rigolets south of the CSX bridge for the night. The next morning we left at daybreak and made it to Madisonville by about 5:30 PM. Of course we had the wind on our nose the entire trip.
I recently refurbished a Morgan 382 and plan to get out to Ship Island soon. I may have to wait until spring as my wife doesn't like to get cold and anything less than 65F is cold for her.

Lazyjack Schooner Fairhope, AL
We did a yacht club cruise last year from Fairhope to Madisonville to go the Wooden Boat Show - four boats total. The first day we sailed 35 miles down Mobile Bay and across the eastern end of Mississippi Sound and anchored at Pettit Bois Island for the night. Next morning we got up, raised anchor and then found that our rudder stock had separated in the night - the blade was resting on the bottom at the end of it's lifting line. The three other boats went on to Gulfport; we retrieved the blade and sailed the boat 35 miles back home without a rudder. This was in our Rob Roy yawl (23') so we were able to steer with the sails. Actually not a bad sail home. Sold the boat early this year and bought a 32' Lazyjack schooner, hope to do the Madisonville trip again someday. The other 3 boats were beat up pretty bad in Lake Pontchartrain with high winds/waves, and were weathered in for almost a week at Gulfport on the return...

On Dolphin watch in the MS Sound

Our cruise 2 weekends ago.

Mom and Son sat on the forward deck to keep an eye out for the pods swimming with us. They were amazed by how many pods of dolphins that swam with us in just a short 3 hour cruise--they counted 5 pods over the cruise. No pics of the dolphins, as I only brought my cell phone and it barely takes good pix of humans! Maybe I'll bring the video camera next time.

Brrr, it's cold THIS weekend...getting down to 38F tonight!

Hah! My wife would think so... boy was she shocked to find out that add a bit of humidity and even mild cold feels like the Yukon Territory in January-- at least to her.

Nope, we support our local power company with a balmy 72F in the house. Makes her feel like she's in the Caribbean all year round!

Thanks for sharing your trip. My wife and I have been sailing Lake Pontchartrain, out of Mandeville, for the past year. We are making plans to sail out into the gulf this spring. Therefore we want to hear the bad the good and the ugly. Any tips you can share with us would be appriciated.

Haven't seen your boat but will start looking for it. We pass by the Kat's Meow on our way out into the lake and have talked with Chuck and his wife.

Just in from a great day sail on the Pontchartrain..beautiful day to be out.. The Stiiletto was happy with the 6-8 kt winds.. Toured the old concrete plant place over by Sunset Point.. Toured up the bayou.. noted Chuck's "Kats Meow" on the point back there.. Just one of those fine days when it is great to be alive and out on the water..

Looks like we are going to have a beautiful weekend this coming weekend. I am going to help bring "Red Boat" back from NOLA. Can't wait.

Mike, I remember the week you are talking about last October. I helped a guy take his boat to Gulfport for the week. We actually were surfing in 3-4's in the lake. We stopped in slidell because the wind was gusting 30+. They had whitecaps in the harbor there. The next weekend I helped him bring it back. Whew. We knew we were over powered when we started passing the tows. We actually had to use "passing on the one captain."

Photo in the Rigolets

Here's a not so special shot of the Rigolets Pass, taken in the end of September while sailing from LA to MS. Looking off the port side here, I was about middle of the waterway--to give an idea of width of the Rigolets.

Also a shot looking back at the Hwy 90 bridge after we passed under it.
