I sail a Cat. 30 on an inland resevoir lake in Ill. I recently purchased a home in Punta Gorda, Fl., on a canel with access to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf. I would like sailors comments who sail these waters and why they prefer their boats? Thanks for your input. Anita

Anita We were considering Punta Gorda, and made the effort to contact sailors from the various Catalina Associations through their websites or association officers. You can find many people in Punta Gorda who will be more than glad to share their enthusiasm with their new hometown. It's not only the boats, it's the people. Since you have the house already, it should be easy to find the new neighbors, we were able to do it from 3,000 miles away. Stu

Punta Gorda
If you have the 3' 8" wing keel Catalina 30 instead of the 5' 3" fin you will be better off. A lot of the channels into Punta Gorda Isles shoal at times and some boaters with deep drafts have to wait for high tides to enter or exit the channels. We live at Burnt Store marina and 5' draft is great for winter when the north winds blow the tide out of the harbor. Our present boat a Hunter 420 has 5', we chose it over a H450 which has 5' 6". Six inches is a big deal at times here. We sailed a Hunter 37 for 8 years before this one with great luck. You will see all types of boats around Charlotte Harbor. Mostly Catalinas and Hunters, but you can find a lot of more expensive and some cheaper ones. Bill Bell

I hope to retire in a few years and relocate to west coast florida,for the long sailing season and hopefully lower cost of living. I have a hunter 290 with 3'6" draft how would you compare port charlott,ft myers area to the tampa,st pete area sailing and living.

Doesn't matter what boat you have down here since all you yankee snowbirds just move down, complain than park your boats until they sink at the docks. Since I can't save my native lands from you people I'm at least a bit pleased to see some of you are actually asking questions. Shallow draft boats work best, especially the one's that get out of the way of the natives.
