Need your input. Sams club has a deal on six volt golf cart batteries. $45.00 each. They are rated 24 hour at 35amp draw. Now if I take two and wire them up to make 12 volts I should get about a 30 hour usage at a 20 amp draw. Since my refrigeration system only draws 5 amps and my electrical draws about another 7 amps when everything is on. These batteries should give me a very long span in between charges. What do you think? Also thanks to every one who gave me inoput on outboard motor selection. I got an excellent deal on a 15hp electric start Johnson long shaft. It fit in the well like a glove. I have more room to move around in there then I had with my 6hp Yamaha. Thanks to all. Joe Pasanisi

Joe, Be careful with your assumptions. Assuming that you can get a steady 35 amps for 24 hours (seems high to me) that gives you 840 amp hours at 6v. That is equivalent to 420 ah at 12v. So if you wire two of them is series, you are back up to your 840 ah. However since good battery management dictates that you discharge down to no more than 50% of your battery capacity. That gives you 420 ah usable. Now asuming that your avaerage load is 10 ah, that gives you 42 hours between battery charging. That is still very good, but my experience is that you will use more electicity than the 10 - 12 ah that you assume. Good luck, Don C-36 Windsong III

Total amp-hour math

I did not understand 6 volt Amp-hr math until I logged on to the Heart Interface web site. They say: "Connecting two batteries in series will double the voltage of the battery bank. For instance, two 6 volt batteries connected in series will produce 12 volts. The Amp-hour capacity of the battery bank will be the same as each individual battery. Example, two 6 volt 220 Amp-hour batteries in series will produce one 12 volt, 220 Amp-hour battery bank. Connecting two batteries in parallel will double the Amp-hour rating while the voltage will be the same as each individual battery. Example, two 12 volt 105 Amp-hour batteries in parallel will produce one 12 volt, 210 Amp-hour battery bank". Hope this helps. Jeff s/v Suzanne

Some years and many jobs back my boss did the same thing with his dive boat and it worked great! Although those 6V batteries were quite a bit taller, make sure you have the room. Good luck!

How many Amp hrs. for $45?!

Could you double check the total amp hour capacity and price of the Sams Club 6V golf cart batteries please? Also, what are the dimensions of these batteries, including length, width, height, and weight? It sounds like you're saying 35 amps x 24 hours, which looks like 840 amp hours. I seems to me that such a lead acid battery would be huge, and weigh hundreds of pounds. Am I missing something here?
