Going with an outboard?

We are considering getting a 1977 Oday 25. The boat is in poor shape as it has been in the cradle for over two years and untouched by the owner. It has an inboard Atomic Four that I feel was never drained of the raw water and is probably rusted out from the inside. My question is; is it possible to pull the engine and convert the space for storage and then mount an outboard on the transom? If so, what is the recommended hp for the outboard and was it offset to the port side? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bill Rome

I use evinrude 9.9

Bill I have a '75 25 and I don't know if it ever had inboard. I do know that folks on this list have discussed taking out an inboard. I have an '84 Evinrude 9.9. It will pretty much push the boat at hull speed. I sail on a nice lake so I don't deal with tides or much in the way of waves. You do want to get the longest shaft you can for thsoe waves. The 9.9 seems to be a common size engine on this boat. Hope your's doesn't need too much work. Its a blast to sail.Enjoy,Mike

ODay 25 Engine Size

The maximum rating for the Oday 25 is 15hp. I also use a 9.9hp and it performs very well. I have not had any problems with running tides and such.I feel the extra weight of a bigger motor is not worth the increase in speed. I use a folding motor bracket and it gives just enough prop clearance when in the raised position.Good luck on your purchase.

It's a 25 & not a 27? I didn't think a 25 would come with an inboard atomic 4

Thank you to all who are responding. I was mistaken, the owner spoke about it as being a 25 but according to the survey it is a 27.

9.9 4 stroke

A 9.9 4 stroke will do anything you need it to do. Buy an extra beefy world class outboard bracket and back it up big time. You also will get an alternator with that-nice !
