Going to the Broughtons

Yeah, there's several excellent books on the Broughtons. I'm probably heading there this summer - been wanting to go for some time. For the more secluded spots like the Broughtons, I carry two DIFFERENT anchors (CQR and Danforth) as well as 200 ft of stern-tie. I've even launched the Danforth as a stern anchor in the middle of the night by "flying" it off the transom - if you can keep it level it flies off far enough to set it (more or less). But the CQR is much better for a rocky bottom.

And of course, carry lots of water, lots of fuel, a solar panel to keep your battery up...

Another item to consider.....and I know everyone has strong opinions around anchoring.....but something I found useful in a few locations was to attach a 'marker' float to the anchor. I'm sure there is a proper term for them. But if your anchor has a shackle slot up at the head you can use the line to pull backwards on the anchor, should it get snagged.

There is a LOT of logging debris in some of those bays and it would suck to lose a $500 Manson Supreme because of a cable or sunken log.

Just another footnote, a dead cell zone, the Broughtons, it is. At least using Telus at the time it was.

Also, as I recall my stern tie has about 300' of line, and has always been enough to take ashore and back to the boat. Smuggler Cove and Princess Cove are two places that I have used stern tie.

Hope your trip is as exciting as ours were. We'll be looking for a detailed cruise log write up later this year.

Oh no....We're going to be there end of June through end of July...Admiral writes the log so you'll know what we had for dinner....I'm not a video guy but a pretty good photographer and bringing lenses. Let me know when you and John get together..

I'm okay with the dinner part...I tend to cover those details as well. I'll probably remain a land lubber until the second week in April when we get a spring break (a whole week off). I usually go to the boat twice a month just to check on ground tackle, etc., and while there meet up with John at the Brown Lantern pub for a bacon cheeseburger deluxe and a pint or two of Boundary Bay on tap.

300+ feet of heavy chain. Never had a problem. Does any ever worry about running over a anchor marker buoy when you swing and fouling the prop?

I've never used an anchor marker buoy so has not been an issue. Seems like a good idea, but... Also never used a stern anchor in addition to a bow anchor, except I have used a stern tie to prevent swinging where room is limited.

June 30 is when we'll be in Pt Harvey and then spend time in the broughtons. We leave Anacortes around June 8 and meander our way north. We're also planning on several days in Octopus Islands prior to Broughtons

I vaguely remember Octopus Islands as one of our past stop overs.

Hey Mark, you are back from the Broughtons? I do hope to see a detailed cruise report from you soon.

John stopped by yesterday. He is still recovering from his vertebrae infection. Has a frail look about him, but he looks much better, is back on the boat and driving. No release to go sailing from his doctor yet, however.

We're now in Deer Hbr and will return to Anacortes the 1st as thats when we get our slip back. Had a good trip. One minor alternator issue is all and i had it fixed in an hr. at Pt Harvey.. Well, the plotter is going wonkers and i think it was before we left. We left Broughtons about 5 days earlier than planned as it was tiring going places through narrow channels-passes etc soley by plotter or ipad, radar/AIS. Sometimes the bow would get sort of visually misty....and actually, when the fog thinned out, it was very majestic. Saw bear, humpbacks and was escorted into Kwatsi by a"bajillion" dolphin. Very cool.

Great to hear. Did you return through Johnstone Strait or Gillard Rapids? Both have their issues, but always an interesting and sometimes challenging route home.

Returned through Johnstone and Discovery through Seymour Narrows from Blind Channel. All in dense fog. Had a large tug 1/4 mi north of Seynour with a huge tow call me on the radio asking if i had radar. He popped into radar view with AIS just as he called. I said we can pass port-port and he was happy. I think i visually caught the very top of his tall barge as we passed..Getting to Blind Channel, we went up Sunderland Channel and ran Whirlpool and Green rapids all in the fog which can be done in a sailboat with neap tides. The helicopters were flying around our mast. (Figure of speech)...The admiral did not want to stay in Johnstone so we hit the channels...we broke out of the fog at Campbell River
