Getting to Catalina is easy. I sail from MDR and it is 180. Now I have the Ismas marked in my GPS and that makes it easier. If you enjoy lots of stuff to do go to Avalon. If you want to enjoy the beauty of a cove go to Cherry Cove pick up a mooring and enjoy the quiet. I've never filed a float plan but it would make sense to take your cell phone and call home when you get there. You might try goihg into Dana Point or Newport and stay over...makes for a shorter sail....since I think you are about 80 miles from the island.
