I am transfering soon and want to sail my 31 Hunter down to SanDiego from Portland, as compared to trucking it. Anyone who has made this trip, I would appreciate knowing what time of year you made the transit, how long (actual sailing time) it took, and would you do it again. I learned how to sail in California and sailed alot up in Puget Sound. Thanks

Mike, the season for this trip is pretty much June through September. I've done it in June and September. July & August would usually be even better. After that the risk of strong storms (with southerlies) increases greatly. I will do that trip again, but it is tough. You can try and harbor hop in between systems, but you still should expect to encounter 40 knots somewhere along the route. We did it on a 32' in 16 days of sailing from Seattle. We only stopped twice. We just trucked our boat up from San Diego. It was $2400. At that price I don't think I'd consider sailing the boat north and sailing south would have to be the right time and cost effective otherwise I'd truck it.

"San Diego bound"

Ahoy there....I am also an Oregonian but living up here in Seattle. We are moving to San Diego in a few months. We were going to truck our H34 but found it was much less expensive and who wants to demast the boat if you don't have too. That just opens up pandoras box. Give me a call and I will tell you what we are going to do and when. Susan Annala (425)444-5627 or susanannala@hotmail.com San Diego is the ticket!!!!
