Anyone out there have info on the Virginia channel? I understand with 6 ft draft (loaded) the swamp is a no go.

You will have NO problems in the Virginia Cut with 6 ft. draft. The Virginia Cut is the main commercial route between Norfolk and the Albemarle Sound.

The Dismal Canal route varies depth due to water flow from Lake Drummond. Normal depth when open is 6 ft.
Do go the Dismal Route to Elizabeth City if you have the time. Tie up at the visitor center midway through the Dismal ... free tie ups in Eliz. City, if the city tie-ups are filled ask the bridge tender as you leave the Dismal Canal and just before you get to Eliz. City ... there are usually private docks available for 'free' just north of the lift bridge ... just watch out for the overhanging trees at those 'private' docks. ;-)

Will be heading south from Cobb Island on the Potomac River about Oct 15 to Beaufort and then outside to somewhere. Planning to stop in St Augustine for at least a week or better, then Velcro Beach, West Palm then the Bahamas...Keep an ear out for Java.

Fair winds.

BTW. Virgina cut is the way to go. Dismal is iffy with 6ft draft. We had 5ft and had a few bumps and got nailed by a couple of logs hurting a prop...

The tulip poplars in the SC Piedmont are dropping their leaves and we are experiencing overnight temps in the 40's. we will be southbound from Little River on or about Oct 15, piddling down the Waccamaw, then inside and outside as conditions warrant toward Stuart.
We will be monitoring 16/9.
