So, I have already sailed south from the SF bay area to LA, and since the economic collapse I haven't sold my boat and I am thinking about visiting my friend in Portland. Other than Point Conception, are there any other hazards moving north and when is the best time to go north.

Tom, Going North

Tom; I have made the trip from Astoria, Oregon to Seattle many times, and I have been south to Newport Oregon. My experience is spring is better for coming north, or fall. Summer usually has a wind from the northwest along the Oregon Washington coast which you will find to be right on your nose. Crab pots, and logs are the biggest hazzards. I usually like to stay out beyond the 40 fathom line (about 20 miles) to avoid the pots. Get the charts, and hope for a series of small disturbances to push you north, or make sure your engine is up to the task. I have had to motor north nearly every time. Fair winds. Mike
