Recently when I go to put my boat into gear, there is a shuttering sound and it appears that the transmission is not engaging. After a while, it will go into gear. Is this a transmission problem or something else Could a cutlass bearing cause this.

That's happened to me...

...a couple of times. I think the RPMs were to high. I have since been sure I was at idle before shifting and have not experianced any of those symptoms. I hope this helps and that it is not a more costly fix. Dylan

Funny you should ask

Just went through this exact thing. Two nuts fell off the transmission coupler. Check to make sure all 5 are on, and tight. Yard failed to attach lock washers.

How tight is tight, Mike?

Mike I wanted to check my coupler bolts too (although they are strung together with wire currently, they still may have worked loose). How much did you crank them down? Is this a torque wrench deal? Thanks, Ron Vanderveer
