No Heroes in my family!

My life jacket wouldn't be far away. My kids will already be wearing theirs. I wouldn't hesitate to put out a call an advise the coastguard and any local traffic, help is then at least standing by while we assess the situation. My husband will no doubt have a different answer. Tina P

Maintain calm

Immediately put on PFD, then attempt to determine leak and whether it's possible to stop or slow the leak. Broadcast a Pan Pan message, since life is not in immediate danger.

I'd use correct grammar

IF my boat WAS taking on water, I'd immediately use the subjunctive tense and change the question to: IF my boat WERE taking on water. The leakage of proper grammar is sinking the entire linguistic boat.

But maybe it's not

contrary to fact. The boat may actually be sinking. Do we really know? Maybe it's sinking; maybe it isn't. If we're not sure, then WAS is correct. Use WERE for those situations that are clearly contrary to fact. For example, if I WERE you, I'd reconsider. Clearly, I am not you. Isn't grammar fun? Scooter

you're right

Whether it's sinking or not is not the point -- it IS taking on water, so, as a fact, the mood is indicative and not subjunctive. Apologies to the author, kudos to the grammarian.
