Is it also safe to use the winch on the mast or should I use one of my larger ones?Another question I have is my steaming and shroud lights are out. I checked for power and there is none and cant find the wires at the bottom of the mast. Where are they???? Or should I just rewire? Thanks for your help.

You can not make a mast ascent safe enough. You should always use the largest winch possible and back it up with a belay line! One rapid decent will show you just how valualable safty is.I have done a lot of heavy rescue in my career, repelling etc. (as a fireman) and seen first hand just how important safty really is. good luck!

Wire Location

Steven,On my Cat 88 tall rig I found the wiring inside of the mast. My halyards run inside the mast and where they enter (through a pulley box) there are six screws that when removed will allow you to pull out that box and access the wires. You should be able to remove the connectors and check for power.Good luck

BEFORE YOU GO CHECK THIS OUT

IF you have any halyard that is mostly wire, and the remainder yacht braid, the joining of the two materials, IS NOT AS STONG as all wire or all braid, be very careful, they have been known to come apart, and if you're partially or completly up the mast, you may come down in a hurry. Select, if you can, a halyard that is totaly one material, or make sure the section of the halyard, on the mast winch, is the same material, that is connected to your chair, also have a second person securing the loose halyard after it passes the mast winch, in case of slipage. I use 6 to 1 block and tackle and pull myself up.
