Even better, for those who don't want to roll your own, and it works with cellular: http://www.boatcommand.com
I've been using it over a year and love it. You can get alerts on your cell phone, and check your boat's status/location from a web browser or app on your phone.

Curious about Boat Command - what cell carrier do they use? I couldn't find anything on their website other than it costs $8.99 per month for the cellular data.

You should contact them. I'm not sure. I get very good coverage in New England (even though I installed the unit below waterline level beneath my cabin sole (yes, high enough to alert me to bilge alarms) and haven't seen any noticeable "gaps" in my historical tracks on their web site.

Update - my Boatcommand anchor alarm stopped working. I called support and they said the smallest setting for an anchor alarm is now 50 yards (mine was set for 30). The app showed “green” (no alerts) even after getting underway.I changed it to 50 yards and it works again, but my home mooring is 20 yards from a rocky shoal. :(

They removed the finer functionality without notice, rendering it useless as a safety feature, and based on this I can no longer recommend it except as an anti theft measure.

Couldn't you just wire an AIS transponder to be always on, for boat location info? You'd get position, heading, speed, etc.

Update -- now the anchor alarm does not work at all. If I set the alarm (at 50 yards as they suggest) I receive an immediate anchor alert and the function turns off by itself. I notified support early yesterday and have not heard back from them. I cannot recommend this product at this time.

I just started using this when I lost my DragQueen. I do like it and it will send an email or call if your boat is dragging but I have not used it. As far as anchor alarm apps I like it.
