MY 26D tiller is splitting at bolt hole. I'd rather not replace it. so I'm thinking of a nut and bolt sandwich and maybe some glue any ideas what would work? -good news is the tiller is not very oily, and is grey /dryed out. gorrilla glue? west system? jb weld? any experience with glue and teak? thanks.

Epoxy Resin

Epoxy Resin would result in stronger than the original wood. It should be the type used in wooden boat constuction and mixed with cabosil to thicken it up. West has an epoxy resin, System Three and U.S. Composites comes to mind.

Think cheap

Epoxy would also be my first choice, but you don't need the top-of-the-line, boat-building stuff, IMHO. I fixed several cracks in my V17 mahogany rudder/tiller with a $4 double-syringe tube of epoxy from Home Depot. It's lasted a year so far. Coat the repair with varnish or other sealant, since most epoxies are not UV stable.

Suggestion

Mr. Bill, Yes, teak and epoxy can get along if you wash the teak with acetone first. The oils in the teak can prevent good adhesion so just wash the teak with acetone (laquer thinner) and let it dry. As the former post suggests any good quality epoxy will do but protect it from the Sun's UV with Cetol or similar. I have to tell you that Marine Tex has held for me where no other would hold. They make it in white as you know but also in grey. It can be tinted with epoxy tinting agents if you wish. Steve P.
