Hi folks, I asked about the teak plywood the other day for my companionway hatch. After looking at the ones on it now I can tell the 1/8th inch teak veneer is simply peeling away from the plywood...which is very strong by the way. I am planning to strip it the rest of the way off and relaminate it to the plywood. (They are nice pinboards!) What type of glue would you use to laminate the teak to the plywood? Thanks again! Jack

Jack, any water proof adhesive will be fine
but before you start plan on how you are going to clamp it. Weldwood plastic resin glue, resorcinol adhesive, Titebond 3, and polyurethane adhesive will serve you well if you can clamp it well and properly. Without proper clamping you will ruin the job. A thin veneer will not behave under clamps in the same manner of a 3/4 inch thick board.

Rich, the only problem with contact cement is that for this project
the veneer has already been trimmed to exact size and fit. With contact cements you almost always make the laminate piece oversize and trim after it has been applied because perfect alignment is so difficult with the contact adhesive. It is impossible to make any adjustments once the two pieces touch.

Maybe he could strip back one half and apply cement... then do the other side. I think it would be difficult to get that off in 1 piece anyway... without wrecking it. Or possibly line it all up with a piece of wax paper between the two. One person could align... the other to pull the wax paper out. Maybe some new veneer he could trim... or solid drop boards.

Here is what I used
To laminate wood backed veneer to my inside cabin sides. It allows you to move the peices on each other for perfect alignment. I glued a test piece and let it soak in a tub of hot water for a week and it showed no signs of delamination. http://www.veneersupplies.com/product_info.php?products_id=738 Rich, contact cenment is really only used for countertops anymore and I think that may also change soon. The stuff is highly toxic(at least the good stuff is), is difficult to work with and for wood veneer there are so many better ways to glue using vacuum bagging.
