Glow Plugs

My new to me 89 Catalina 30 with m25xp has been starting with no problem.
I engage the glow plugs for about 20-25 seconds then start.
I have been reading post that say engaging the plugs too long can burn them out.
I'm interested on how everyone else starts up.
(Right now I have 2 identical deep cycle batteries)

I don't have a universal, I have a Phasor marine Kubota. Last year it would be a really hard cold blooded bugger to start. Sometimes 6-7 10 sec holds until it fired. Glow plugs were $85 replacement, Held 12 sec and fires first time now. It is so amazing that it fires so much easier.

I believe 25-30 seconds of glow plug warm up is normal. If it starts fine with 25-30, then try 20-25 and so forth until it doesn't start as readily.
I installed the relay so I use about 8 seconds but only on the first start of the day. When we are ready to return to the marina after sailing I don't need to use the glow plugs.
As @LeslieTroyer says, they are cheap so I don't think there is a need to worry. I bought a spare set from Amazon for $7ea.
