My Hunter 310 has a Yanmar 2 cylinder diesel. The manual that comes with the engine shows a variety of instrument panels but none are like the one on my boat. I have three warning lights, a key slot and starter button. My problem is locating the glow plug or whatever warming device is used for cold starts. The diagrams in the Yanmar manual shows a counterclockwise turn of the key to engage the glow plug for 15 seconds and then fire the engine. I don't have that on my starter switch configuration and I haven't found it anywhere else. I need some suggestions or directions since it's getting to be that time of the year where the glow plug will be handy.

No glow plugs...

that I'm aware of. Pretty sure Yanmars don't use them. Had a 2 cyl. for over 8 years and now own a 3 cyl., and NO glow plugs!

Yanmar doesn't use glow plugs.

Yanmar engines use a pre-combustion to warm the air fuel mixture instead of glow plugs. This is better because you get instant starting and no glow plugs to worry about.

18hp yam 05 has the system

I have a new H27, and it has the glow plugs. Yanmar must be including them in the new 18hp version. The key slides in vert, turn counter clockwise to glow then clockwise to start.

Doghouse and Ron D:

Just because the key can be turned to glow, it doesn't mean there is a glow plug. Your engine may or may not have the glow plugs, but you should contact Yanmar just to make sure. On our '92 37.5, the panal next to the keyhole also shows the glow position. I always turned to glow before starting. Then during the 1st maintenance service, I called a Yanmar mechanic and video the service he performed so I could have the video for future reference. Well, he told me that our engine doesn’t have any glow plugs. The panel shows it, and the manual may also show it, but there are no glow plugs. It is just a standard panel they use. Ron D: All diesel engines fires on compression and that is why there are no spark plugs. Glow plugs are not the same as spark plugs. Glow plugs, if the engine has it, are used to heat the chamber when the engine is cold, so it will be easier to start. Once it starts, then the glow plugs is no longer used, and compression keeps it going.
