Refinish of the deck and mast are coming nearer to the top of my to do list. Seems like I see a lot of boats with a matt finish on decks, and flat on the mast. Any opinions on deck and mast finish. Gloss, Matt/Satin, semi gloss or flat. I think I would like the appearance of a high gloss, but wonder how much, if any, glare problems would come from this. I know there will be lots of different opinions on this, so lets hear them.

Flattener

N&E- You can really have the best of both worlds by adding a flattening agent to a gloss paint. It still has the nice crisp color. The mattes that I find hideous are the ones that make your mast look like a stove pipe. Keep the glare out of your eyes if all possible it can cause you ocular health issues. You only get one set of eyes at this time.

No glare from my mast

I refinished all my spars last winter and used Perfection. I though about fattening it but now I am glad I didn't. It looks great. On the deck I would go with a semi gloss.

I agree with Tim for the spars ...

I used Perfection as well and selected Snow White for the color. I can understand glare being a factor for the decks but not for the spars. The spars just don't have enought surface area, and besides there is no flat surface for glare to be an issue. I worried about it some, but after last season, it wasn't a concern. The gloss really looks great and took years off our boats appearance. For the decks, I'm all ears at this point, as they are also on my to-do list.
