This topic first appeared as part of a thread in the Catalina 22 forum. It seems to have attracted enough interest to start its own thread.

It started with a comment I made to Jim Eller's question regarding an older tow vehicle. I said that I once had another vehicle stand ready with a tow strap to help get my 1977 Volare wagon with 318v8 and 4 speed stick in gear so I would not burn the clutch on a long ramp at Manset Town Dock on Mount Desert Island, Maine.

The car was a special order by the original owner for power and economy. It was a lot of fun to drive and towed like it owned the trailer but its demise came earlier than its natural death because of what happened on the ride home from Maine. I ran into stand still traffic on the Maine Turnpike and had to clutch in and out of first gear. After about 3 miles of that, I had to find the next exit and reroute. My left knee was on fire from the effort and I still had over 500 miles to get home. My knee has never recovered from that event 24 years ago and to this day I cannot clutch for long in any vehicle with significant spring pressure. The vehicle that I replaced the 318v8 4spd Volare with was just as rare.

I found another (second hand) '77 Volare SE with 360v8, 4 barrel carburetor and locking differential. It had leather interior, AC and electric windows. The promise of power was too great so I added headers, dual exhaust and turbo mufflers. I kept it as a sleeper (looked completely stock) but it could out-accelerate anything and got some incredulous looks from Corvette drivers at times. It also out-accelerated everything while towing my Catalina 22. So after taking my time on the on-ramp (to make sure nothing was disturbed inside the sailboat), I would floor it, put on my indicator, join the traffic flow and never again see the cars that piled up behind me on the ramp. I can still remember the torque lifting the drivers side when it delivered horsepower to the back wheels.

It was an awesome tow vehicle, a solid dependable everyday car, and never broke traction probably because of all the glass on the rear end holding the back end down. It gave enough years of service to bring the original purchase price down to miles per penny. It succumbed when the 727 TorqueFlite transmission disintegrated internally while running under light load heading home from work on a winter night. Living in the rust belt, no vehicle makes it past 12 without significant rust and sometimes the frame and body make an otherwise acceptable repair job just too expensive for a 15 yo car with 221,000 miles on the clock.

Trucks and vans have done a great job since then but that '77 Volare 360v8 4bbl will always be my dream tow monster.

The thread is open for comments and stories about your favorite tow vehicles.

When I was a kid my dad had an old '56 GMC Carryall. It was built like a tank. It was a three speed stick shift with 4WD Warner Hubs, and a compound low transfer case. I learned how to drive in that car. I remember getting stuck in traffic coming back from Malibu after a day of surfing, and I also found my leg shaking trying to hold the clutch in. I can also remember my 4'-10" mother driving my sisters neighbors and me to school it and she was so cool, the truck too.
There must not have been many of those around because I've never seen another like it. Heres a picture of one, the only one in Google (ours was green).

Astro Vans come with 5000lb standard tow capacity. And you got room for all your stuff.

I've owned 4 and have two at the moment.

My dad had a '57 Pontiac Chieftan station wagon with the California Hiway Patrol engine. Three on the tree, No AC. Vinyl seats. (ouch) Used to go down to the Colorado River Water skiing below Parker Dam in the middle of Summer. Air temp 110+ Water temp. 55. Instant heart stoppage. Mom had a '58 Buick Limited. Built out of boiler plate. Only thing missing was the turret. Fair Winds and Full Sails...

And then there was our year round, all season tow rig. The 1979 3/4 ton 4X4 Chev Surburban. The perfect answer for a question no one asked. It towed anything if your body could stand the punshment.

International Harvester TravellAll. 392V8 with automatic transmission and 3:73 rear end. We pulled horse trailers, boats, campers, and seats loaded and back end full of gear. The down side was the MPG. Back then (just before the first gas crisis, we didn't know what MPG was); what we did know was that with the aux. tank we could fill up 22+19 gallons and go a long way. Back then you could spec. out IH trucks with hundreds of options for not only transmissions & engines, but axles, brakes, springs, etc etc. But the parts department would go nuts. You didn't ask for a sparkplug without having your original spec page.

I had to address this issue this past January. I had bought a 26' American Sailboat. It weights in at 5600 and the trailer I am sure is at least 1500.

The first truck I bought was a used 89 F-250 4X4 and it was a dog. It would pull, but just barely. Everything about the truck was wrong. We then had major issures with parts of it and before it was all over. It cost more money and we lost money getting rid of it.

I decided to ask here on the forum and was advised to look for a 99' Suburban 2500 with full towing package.

Sumner who posts on here frequently had gotten one in AZ. I think he told me he got it for around $3500, that was just what I paid for the Ford.

I started my search and found that exact Suburban 2500 with all the bells and whistles and it was listed for $4000. We bargained some and I got it for $3500 then I had to get new tires as the old ones would not be what I would want my wife to drive to work on in the up coming winter.

All I can say is WOW, what a truck. It handles the boat no problem at all. It is a pleasure to drive.

Just my .02 worth.

My backup tow vehicle and current daily driver since the little woman totalled the Caddy, the Porsche is in the shop having a new front suspension pan welded in, and she needs the new truck for her business, is my old 75 1ton dually singlecab, longbed with a balanced, cammed, injected 454, Thorley tri-Ys into a 3" single exhaust, granny 4speed with a gearvendors o/d, Dana70 axle with 4.10s, and air ride in front, air over springs in the rear. It will haul anything and rides as smooth as my Caddy did. I think Frank has seen it.

Just for future reference, an extremely stiff clutch pedal is a sign of a worn out or damaged clutch.

Like Tom mentioned I don't think you can beat a '96 to '99 Suburban for a vehicle that will tow a big load, still get decent gas mileage towing (11 for us) or not (17) and will run over 250,000 miles on the original transmission and engine if the fluids are changed on a regular basis. And all of this for under $4000. Hard to beat. Ours has 150,000 miles and since we use it primarily for just towing the Mac it will probably last us forever.

Now saying that I've towed 6000 lb. loads with....

...my GMC, but not the boat as I don't want to leave it at a ramp for any period of time and it is only 2 wheel drive.

What I'm hoping to do though is to make this.....

...'51 Desoto Limo we have into a tow vehicle. I have another fuel injected 5.7 chevy V-8 that is like in the Suburban along with a better/stronger 4L80E transmission that has been rebuilt for over 700 HP that I have and I'd put those in the Desoto along with a GM front clip with power steering and disc brakes like I did on the GMC above.

It wouldn't be 4 wheel drive, but with a weight of over 4500 lbs. I think it would work on most ramps that we have been to.

Ruth really wants me to get on this project also.

Sum

When I was in High School, (pre 1976) I worked for a guy that owned a nursery. I was in the passenger seat of his International pickup truck as he pulled a triple axle trailer with a bulldozer on it up a steep dirt road from a stop at the bottom. We had to open the gate. I've been impressed ever since. I think it could have pulled three of them up at once if it wanted to.

I currently have a 3/4 ton Avalanche with the 8100 engine and I'm impressed so far.

International Harvester, aka Cornbinders, were a great machine. My dad bought a '37 Hudson touring car with an in line 8 engine. Would vapor lock in a heartbeat. was probably equivalent to same year Caddy. Actually had a steel trunk on the stern, jump seats, the works...

Jeep Cherokee

I bought a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic new and towed with it up until July 2009. By then, it had a lot of quirky problems that I put up with, but despite the problems, it was a dependable vehicle, and it was gorgeous!
Sadly, it was sent to the crusher after I recieved $4500 "Cash for clunker" money...Thanks Obama!
I replaced that Jeep with a 2010 Subaru Forester, which is rated at 2400 lb. towing capacity. The Forester is tow-rated higher than the comparable models, and with AWD, it's fine for pulling my Oday Mariner 19 in and out a few times a year. It's a good all around vehicle, but I haven't towed any distance with it yet.
With gas over $3/gallon, the "Glory Days" of driving a guzzler are over for me....

I tow with a 1993 Suburban, 1500... I've owned it 10 years and towed our travel trailer many miles. Have the electric brakes. I will get a newer Sub... when I need it! Brian

I still have my 98 Chevy Express one ton with 454. Used to tow about 10,000 lb trailer plus the van loaded with stuff. Could hardly tell the trailer was back there. At one very steep, private launch ramp the owner said I would have to rent his truck to pull out. My van didn't even flinch.
