A Token Of Appreciation
Black Oak Marina is owned and operated by "Speck" Hill and his wife Mary, who runs the restaurant. Black Oak isn't one of those glitzy yacht harbors; some might just call it a "boat dock", but it is home to "Honey Bear", a couple hundred other boats of all types and the modest facilities of the Cherokee Lake Sailing Club. Speck and Mary live at the marina and keep a close eye on things. He has called me at home to let me know if there's any problem, such as broken mooring lines or anything at all. They are friends as well. They also host a major 4th of July Celebration with live music and thousands of dollars of fireworks over the lake, out of their own pockets. I always get them a small gift at Christmas just to let them know that I really do appreciate them. Dick Vance H-25.5 "Honey Bear"

I think before I give them Sh--, I would like to see about them giving us something other than; 1) 2 showers for 500 slips. 2) 3 moorage price hikes in the last year. 3) unenthusiastic and snotty service. 4) free parking for our guests. 5) more than one parking pass per family. At our harbor, the staff has a party at the end of the season. Probably your marina has something similar. Contribute 20 bucks or so to that--more if you've been bad! If it's run by a husband/wife team, give 'em something for the holidays. PS--To the guy who thinks he has had crappy service--leave. Rarely is anyone presented with only one option as to where to tie up. Write a letter to the managing firm, let them know your beefs in reasonable terms, and book out of there.
