So, I was on the home page here, checking out what’s for sale, it’s the time of year to start piling up stuff. I noticed an add for floating winch handles that asked “How many handles have you contributed to Davey Jones “. Personally, I’ve given 2 but also could add a watch, a couple of hats and there’s an impressive pile of hand tools on the bottom under my old slip. Oh yeah, and 2 fishing rods…and an anchor.Last summer during the Mayor’s Cup race, I was crewing on a 1969 C&C Corvette in a gusty 30 knots. We lost a brand new winch handle, my favorite hat, and the mast light in a dramatic encounter with a very aggressive boat! (but we won!)So, my Question; What have the rest of you “given” to Davy?Ferg

Davy Jones Locker

Ferg- The first time I took out my new to me boat. I lost my "lucky" hat. What a way to start out with this boat. In the three years, more hats, sun glasses, reading glasses, contacts, a phone, cans of beer, packs of butts, towels, nav light lenses, my dog, but I got him back. I also lost over the side my buddies girlfriend, too much vino. We got her back too. Thats about it for three years. Wonder whats going down this year? Rob Hessenius

1. 2 pairs of Ray Ban sunglasses2. 1 winch handle3. whisker pole (ouch that cost some money)4. my favorite mount gay run hat (my first NOOD regatta)5. another "life is good" visor whihc just got broken in...6. my lunch hook (don't ask.it's a loooooonnnnnnggggg story)7. kayak oar8. very big crescent wrench (not to be confused with wench. I'd NEVER lose that)9. oh yeah, I've probably lost my mind a few dozen times......

Fish Phone

Two years ago in Tribune Bay on Hornby Island BC on the west coast of Canada, I lost my old hand-cranked Motorola cell phone over the side in 30 feet of water. About an hour later, my buddy received a call from my number. He could not understand the caller's accent and the voice was definitely fishy. Seems some passing Red Rock Cod decided to call and report the finding of my phone. Probably wanted a reward.

While I have lost a few items at the dock I recovered them all with a "fishing" magnet. You also find lots of other folks stuff left from previous seasons. If you (your brother-in-law) are losing lots of stuff try what we use in the Army, attach a cord to the item and to a convenient location near where it is used. You can always tell the new guy as his sergeant has all his important stuff dummy corded to his web belt.

It goes with boating

Every year I think about just throwing a handful of tools in the water by the boat just to get it over withI've lost 2 cell phones,1 sperry topsider,a lot of tools,a lot of favorite hats,2 pairs sun glasses,lost count of reading glasses,did I mention a lot of tools, oh I can't forget about the 2hp outboard my son lost when he flipped the dink(I got it back with a boat pole)and the very same boat pole went overboard one day but we didn't turn back for it(I think it floated)There's more but I decided to become a certified scuba diver so I can get my stuff back!

My Contributions

We haven't had that much time to lose a lot, but we have contributed. We bought our C25 last March and the previous owner gave me a C25 hat, some foam drink sleeves, and a couple of hat clips. Well, stupid me, I couldn't figure out why the eyeglasses clip was so short it wouldn't go around my head. Yep, first outing, I raised up just enough for the boom to hit my hat as I tacked and it went overboard. (Guess it was just as well not my head) Now I wear clips all the time.Also lost a deck brush by leaning it up on the lifelines on the boat in the next slip. While I sat in the cabin having my lunch, the other boat moved back and the brush fell in and sank to the bottom. Kept me from finishing the deck cleaning, but cost me another brush. I have heard of people losing outboards, but I'm not one of them yet.

Not lost...

...just not retrieved yet. Wierdest last summer was coming up from a spin re-pack and asking "where's the other spin sheet?" Blank looks all around said it all. Oops. Expensive lesson: you unclip a sheet you re-clip it somewhere.

an outboard motor...

but got it back!sailing home on my 1st boat, a MacGregor 25, I pulled the starter rope on my Honda 7.5 and she started 1st pull, as usual. Problem was that somehow the engine was engaged in reverse at full throttle. Motor went backwards, boat continued forward and I watched her sink to the bottom.We were on a dead run, so it took a couple of minutes to turn the boat around and get back to the spot the engine has abandoned ship...dropped anchor there and polled the 3 crew member to point to where they thought they saw the engine fall in, and of course we all pointed in different directions.Luckily, we were in only about 4' of water, so we tied 1 end of the anchor rode to the ankle of 1 person who stood stationary at the boat, other end to my ankle who walked a big circle around the boat dragging for the engine. Eureka! We actually snagged it, brought it home, took it to the shop to be cleaned out....and she ran perfectly well and powered us into many more misadventures over the next few years....fair winds...

Lets see..........

During the past 12 years and three boats, as best as i can remember. Two winch handles, (both were floating), a real old brass padlock that the previous owner had engraved with the boats name, one cell phone (lost while loading boat), and three pairs of cheap sunglasses. I guess thats not too much too pay as i sail darn near every weekend (have only missed one weekend since the first of Jan.)!!

One cell phone when I fell in washing my boat, and one cordless drill that fell when I was up the mast. I think that is enough.

No chance of getting that stuff back.On a happier note, I ALMOST lost my fiberglass helm seat on my 89' H30G. Luckily it hit the water right side up and trapped some air under it allowing it to float just long enough to grab it. I shudder to think what that would cost to replace. I have a safety line on it now.Do I win?Tim

I lost ...

I lost a few radios over the side while under way. One winch handle. And a nice micro size radio while in the slip. JoeWhen I lost the micro size radio it just happened a diver was cleaning my neighbors piece of boat and the diver retrieved the radio for five American dollars.I took the radio apart and put it in a bowl of fresh water for two days. Then I left it in the sun a day ... and it has worked fine since. It had one of those Nickel hydride rechargeable batteries and it too survived the plunge and continues on to this day.Regards, big

Been there done that

I have lost countless items overboard including a spinnaker pole. I refuse to buy sunglasses that cost more than $10, but those cheapies never go over. I used to be so proud that in 25 years I never lost a winch handle over, but, alas, I finally figured out a way to do that. By the way, speaking of winch handles, I have never understood a use for a non locking handle. can anyone enlighten me on this. They make them, so some people must see a need and I have been missing something.

use for a non locking handle

I wish I could still find one. The non-locking handles are so much easier to use. OK, I did lose one winch handle in the BVIs, but the trip was worth it. We replaced it in Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda for pretty much the same price that we'd find in the states. A new floating double handed plastic one replaced the crummy old one that came with the boat. We rented a car from Leverick Bay and drove over the pass. Quite a fun part of the whole trip. As a capper, the boat rental yard manager let us keep the new handle and it's still working for us! Unfortunately, it's a locker and I find it's a pain to keep cracking the flipper to get it out. Anyone know of a 10 inch non-locker?

Stu, I had to replace a non-locking handle which I lost overboard while racing on a friend's boat. he insisted on non-locking so, i had to buy a locking one, then with a philips-head screwdriver, I just took off the locking plate. Quite easy to remove. Give that a try.

Ok, fess up!

C'mon, no one is owning up to an outboard motor, or maybe even a dock cart?Before my wife and I were married, we were at anchor in about 50' of water aboard my Hunter 450. Her 5 y.o. daughter dropped her favorite beanie baby over the side. But you know, we were in the courtship phase of our relationship... remember that, guys? ... so I weighed anchor, threw it in reverse, and recovered it with the boat pole. We were married that evening.Nah. I made up that last part.
