Hello, our gib unrolled during a storm and shattered. Now we have to buy another and I would like to consult before making the purchase. Our boat is a 37 foot Hunter Cherubini 1979 and had a 44 luff, 19 foot Gib .

We are going for a used sail, but most of them are 23, 24, up to 26 foot sails.

I would appreciate your opinion if That 4, 5 or 6 additional feet al the bottom of the sail, will be ok for our boat.

Also there are dacron 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 oz . Here at the Caribbean some time we have strong winds, but dont know if 7 or 8 will be too heavy.

Thanks !!

Hi. If your boat is a 1997 Hunter, it is not a Cherubini-designed Hunter 37 Cutter, which were built from 1978 to 1985. You should ask your questions in the "ask a Hunter Owner" and "Big Boats" forums. Good luck!

Sorry Jim , This german Alzheimer, the year built is 1979
OK then...bewillkommnen! I just ordered a new jib for my 1983 H37C last December. The dimensions are:

  • Luff = 44'
  • Foot = 16' 8"
  • Leech = 35' 4"
  • LP% = 12' 11"
  • Area = 286 sq. ft.
  • Cloth 7.3 oz.
Lots of owners use bigger jibs (some even remove the inner forestay and the staysail altogether and use the boat as a sloop instead of a cutter). The only problem with a bigger jib is that it may be more difficult to tack the sail around the the inner forestay. You could always have a bigger sail cut down if it is a problem.

I am also the person who maintains the database of the Hunter 37C - I would be pleased to add your boat to the database (and send you a copy in Excel spreadsheet) if you care to provide me with your boat's HIN (hull number), name & home port. You can email me: jameslegere[at]eastlink[dot]ca or PM me via HunterOwners.com

Yes, that is the case, our boat doesn´t have the inner forestay, so we use the boat as a sloop. I´ll send you the HIN.

Regards

I ordered a complete suit of sails (less spinnaker) from R.B. Stevens in Lunenberg (the local North loft - however they are the 'house brand' not North sails) PM or email if you want more info.

Are these the dimensions for the yankee jib? I have a 105 jib that came from a 2nd hand store and I want to replace it with the original sailplan.

Yes that is what the sailmaker used to build me a Yankee. I believe it is the the original sail plan. PM me if you want more info.
