Getting up my Mast

I have a Hunter 25.5 and last weekend my Main halyard's shackle pin broke and the halyard went to the top of the mast. Any good ideas on how to get up the mast without killing myself? I'm not crazy about free-climbing the mast and I don't have a chair or seat to hoist myself up in. Anyone used something creative and handy to accomplish this undesireable task?

hire a marina monkey

I paid a guy at my marina $25 to climb the mast. He put a loop in the remaining halyard and used it as a hand hold and I partially pulled him up.

Monkey indeed

Don't do it yourself, since the mast and winches are not that strong. Find a yard monkey or an eight-year-old boy who's good with his fingers (provided he's not testifying against Michael Jackson). A colleague's son who's a tree surgeon dropped 25 feet this week and died, so don't take the risk.

Drop the mast

This is a trailerable Hunter right? Isn't it relatively easy to drop the mast, retrieve the halyard and put the mast back up?

Unstep the Mast

I agree with David, a couple of years back on My 25.5 my Halyard ended up at the Masthead. I got a couple of Friends together and unstepped the Mast. It only took about an hour to do the job. Just make sure you mark your turnbuckles to ease the retuning of the rig.

Drop the Mast

When I go up the mast I like to make sure I am secured to 2 haylards. Unless you have a spinaker haylard - I would drop the mast.
