o"day 22 weatherby lake mo
Just bought 1984 22 ft 222 o"day Will sail in small lake with shifting winds. Will race a bit with other cruisers and would like thought on competing with Catanina 22 and such. How will this boat compare in speed and performance generally? thanks

Can't add much to the link provided above except to say all things being equal, that is if both boats were showroom new, I'd give the edge to the Catalina. But since they are not condition is very important. Between those two boats I'd say the winner is whoever has the better sails and was a better sailor.

Remember that the 222 is a VERY different boat from the older 22. As said before, condition and skills will always rule. I love the keel/CB vs the swing keel. The PO of my 1984 222 raced her and did quite well. The boat is great. Shore up the chain plates. Check for water intrusion around the pulpit and base of mast. Have fun.

The 222 is a very good production boat. I have a 1984 model and love it. It is however a "production" boat and comes w/ some problems. The two largest I believe are the centerboard and rudder. Both are under built and will prob. need replacing. Would bet many have failed. Ive molded the blades (I used to work in tollin in a composite job shop) and also rebuilt the rudder assm w/ thicker alumaman sides and did away w/ the rivits and got away from that sloppy tiller. That said however many boats in that size come with that problem. The third area is the main-sheet. Can only say it was a cheap way out for Oday. After a season I replaced mine with a traveler that has controll lines for the car. Huge pluss.
Again I love the 222 overall.

I have also replaced a broken original rudder on my 1984 222. Went with a solid replacement from D and R. No issues yet with the centerboard but it's day will come. The cored rudder and center boards were under built no doubt.
