Congrats on the boat. Where is your slip?

We are in Mandarin. The river is a terrific place to learn your new hobby. Come by and we'll share some brew or wine.

Congratulations on owning a 38 foot long "hole in the water" into which you can pour money! Seriously, don't let this bunch get you down. They all love the sport, and would mortgage their souls to be on your boat sailing in Jacksonville this weekend (if only to show off how to tie a dock cleat the best way). Jackdaw's estimates may be a little high because he's a racer (money = speed) and we pull our boats out of the water annually when it gets hard, but it's good to have an annual budget for boating and 5-10% of the total value isn't a bad start. This first year, you'll need to double it as you commission the boat (new safety gear, sheets - both kinds, upgrade that old VHF radio to DSC, etc.).

To your original question about 'hosting' sailors ... the experienced ones of us have been on really terrible and really nice boats. We've been tossed around, wet, cold, and sleep deprived -- sort of like backpacking. If we didn't have some resilience and self-reliance, we wouldn't be reading a sailing blog. Bring some snacks and beer, the sailors will appreciate what you have.

You might want to ask them what they like, first. :)
Im with Stu... pita chips and hummus is NOT something you should offer "guys" for a snack... although anyone can like pita chips and hummus, its not really a satisfying snack after a persons been on the water a few hours:D.

a cheese/meat/cracker tray, a veggie and fruit tray with water, sodas and/or beer are always welcome and it offers something for everyone no matter what kind of diet they prefer.

Consider taking the ASA 101 basic keel boat course. You should get two days on the water with an instructor on your boat. We found it valuable and confidence building, even with our prior sailing experience. That's a lot of nice boat... enjoy.
