recently the admiral bumped the dock at the pump out dock. the dock was lined with that plastic dock edge guard. It left an abrasion mark on the side of the boat. I tried to rub it out with rubbing compound to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to rub the mark out? It is not a scratch in the gel coat, it is the plastic edging abraided onto the side of the boat.

Dock-rash treatment

I feel your pain, the plastic strip on our 15 year old docks is now harder than gelcoat. The effects of a gentle caress can usually simply be polished out, I think you'll find the "wetter" one-step cleaner/polish more effective than rubbing compound, as it lifts the melted plastic, rather than trying to cut it off. If the getcoat is slightly damaged, polish won't work. In that case I've found one of those abrasive sponge things effective, just use the minimum effort to take the marks out. Then polish smooth.

WD-40

I once hot one of the docks with black bumpers on it with a charte boat, one of the boats next to the boat I was on had some WD-40 and told me to try it, it just wiped the mark right off. John

Wheel Polish

I tried all my car "stuff". I found Mother's Aluminum Wheel polish works fantastically. It seems to have some really coarse grit that breaks down very fast to a very fine polish. My new to me H320 came out of a charter fleet and came with lots of marks like that, now it looks like new after mere minutes of effort. Gary

Try this

Try Barkeeper's Helper. It cleaned everthing off my hull including ICW stain, rust, exhaust, oil... It is basically cheap oxilidic acid powder and cost like $2 and that was at the marina shop.
