Getting alternator information

Does anyone have a method to determine the characteristics of my alternator? I'm thinking about moving to AGM batteries and want to know what the amp output and the voltage (which I guess is regulated by the voltage regulator) will work with the AGM's or if I have to do something there as well. I have the Yanmar 3GM30F with the alternator that came with that engine if that helps.

Probably the Balmar 55

I have the same engine on a Hunter 336 and I have the Balmar 55Amp model. AGM batteries use generally the same charge voltage as flooded batteries, so you're OK there, you won't harm them. Gels are the problem children. You're right, the voltage regulator controls the output voltage of the alternator. Paul sv Escape Artist h336

I've charged all three with the stock Hitachi.

Dave: I have charged all three with the standard Hitachi alternator without a problem. I am not sure of my alternator output, but it should be fine. As Paul mentioned, the AGM's are more characteristic of flooded batteries.

Good source for alternator info

I have a really good sources for this type of information - Nigel Calder's book calles the Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual. The book has a comprehensive section on batteries and charging systems. This book provided me the information necessary to size an alternator and choose a voltage regulator. It also taught me how to repair and troubleshoot them them (along with starters, water pumps and many other boat systems. It's an invaluable reference book. I never set foot on my dad's 42 ft catamaran without it. It's worth a look.

Yanmar alternatorss

The smaller Yanmar engines normally come with Hitachi, internally regulated, alternators - either 35 or 55 amp rating. You didn't mention the size of the AGM's, but you might want to think about replacing the alternator with a higher amperage externally regulated (Balmar or AmplePower) alternator, and a three-stage external regulator (such as Balmar MC612). I'm about to do just that for my Yanmar 4JH-TE. I'm purchasing an AmplePower 4023S 108 amp alternator, and the Balmar MC612. Make sure you get the correct saddle mounting for the Yanmar. Derek

another idea

Several friends in this area have taken there old alternators to a rebuilder and had them rewound to handle higher loads. They are all very happy and its much less expensive.

Alternator Output and Internal Regulators

Dave You wrote: "which I guess is regulated by the voltage regulator." If it is an internal regulator, you're not gtting much of anything out of your alternator, regardless of which size it may be. In lieu of us writing another book here about an already well covered subject, take Guy's suggestion and get Calder's book. It's the best investment you'll ever make for you and your boat, especially the electrical systems. (See other posts in this 24 Hour Activity period that also recommend that book.) You can also access websites from alternator and regultor manufacturers, like Xantrex and Balmar, and gain firsthand knowledge of their products and how charging systems work. The West Marine Advisor columns are also good sources of information on products and systems. That'll give you some homework to do, but you'll you'll be getting it from the right sources, and saving repetition from us, so then you can hone your questions down to more specific requests. Good luck, Stu
