Owner of a Hunter 27. One of the best improvements (beyond pedestal mounted instrumentation) was an AC/DC thermoelectric refrigerator. Great is the only word. Converted the ice chest into storage. All for under $120. Plus your labor. Saw many brands and models for $400.+. Purchased an igloo brand (Kool Mate)at K-Mart for $99. comes with the AC/DC converter. Popular Marine stores sell the exact same thing for $225. Purchased a battery guard seperately for about $15. The Kool Mate fits perfecly in the galley cabinet, of course you have to remove the doors and provide some vent holes on the side of the frame. Works very well. No more lugging ice, watery food, water from melted ice in the bildge etc etc.

Amps?

How many amps per hour? And what is the capacity in cubic feet? There are so many nice solutions. But if they require six 100 A/H batteries then they are not feasible.

Used dry ice in our H28 ice box...

My first mate and I cruised for ten to twelve days at a time in the San Juan Islands during the summer months on our H28. We layed down two bags of chopped ice, then a twenty pound block of dry ice then two more bags of chopped ice in our ice box. When we returned to port the dry ice was gone, but the chopped ice was a solid block. It worked great in place of the money it would take to upgrade to an electric reefer, plus the additional batteries needed to operate it. Terry

Hi Eric, thanks for the tip. I've read the...

articles you reference. Adequate ventilation seems to play a role in the safe use of dry ice. We always kept our port lights open while we slept for that very reason. We no longer have the H28, but our new boat has reefers and a AC/DC system to support them. Terry

No special Batteries Needed

Responding to someone's comment about a requirement for additional battery capacity. NOT SO. I run two standard 12V deep cell batteries and they are perfectly fine. Again, connect a power guard, if low voltage cutoff is activated- run engine for a while till recharged. Unit draws less than 5 amps. Have gone on 3-4 day trips with no problem. As for dry ice, have fun finding it and dragging it to your dock. For me, this has made sailing life much easier.

hope you live in a cool place

I guess if you live someplace cool they are ok. If you have an outside temp of 90 degrees the themoelectic coolers would only get down to 45 or 50 degrees. I think I would want something cooler if I left meats in my fridge.

The ice chest draws 3.8-4.1 amps

:), it only cools to 35-40 degrees below ambent air temp, at a room temp of 95 deg it will only keep the box to 55 or 60 deg

A bag for ice for the drinks too.

If you have any type of refrigeration, you can always buy ONE bag of ice. This will supplement the cooling as well as providing ice for the evening cocktails! You will be surprised how long a bag will last as long as you are not making gallons of Margaritas.
