Im looking at buying a boat form a broker. The one im looking at is been sold "as is", but is in generally good condition. I want to check out the rigging- heres the problem-- the Jib line has been pulled all the way up the mast. How the heck do I get it down? Thnaks.

If The Broker Wants the Sale Let Him Get it Down

Failing that, I would not buy a boat unless I could see the mast head rigging. There could be surprises in store at the mast head. Ask the broker/owner to lower the mast, or negotiate a rigging survey. If you buy it, add at least 2 extra lines, on blocks to the rig, capable of hauling up a jib, and secure them away as a "just in case". Curious how high the mast is and what size boat are you referring to. Don

Jib Line Retrival

One trick that you might try is to take a coat hanger wire and fashion it into a hook, attach the "hook" to the main halyard, along with a downhaul. Hoist the "hook" up the mast, work it around and try to grab the jib line. Good luck with your survey of the boat. Ben Allen Montgomery, AL O'Day 26

seller/brokers job

If the jib halyard is unavailable, in the mast with the jib shackle at the mast top, have the broker or owner get up the mast via a bosun's chair to retrieve it for you. It's their responsability. Otherwise you can go up yourself but first read a "how to" if you hav not done this before so you don't get into trouble up that high. Good luck

Thanks for all the replies. You where all right, I should have had the broker do it. But, I didnt want to wait. so, i taped a bunch of broomsticks together, stuck a nail in the end and fished it down myself.
