The distance of moon to earth is a big factor. The gravitaional force change is x squared when the change in distance is x.

I'm not claiming that this is a reliable way to forecast earthquakes, and it might just be pure coincidence, but didi you ever notice that most earthquakes (especially the big ones) happen in February and March?

There was an earthquake in Burma, that counts! I mean close enough right.

Eddie it was closer than that Burma begins with a B and California begins with a C that is only one letter away. I don't think the Gov of Myanmar has filed name change paperwork with God yet.

I found some interesting information regarding off shore boating and tsunami warnings. You are better off heading out to sea to a depth of 1200 ft. as recommended by the CG. So if you are sitting at the dock and you want to keep your boat safe you will need to calculate how long it would take you to get to those depths. Here at MDR you would have to be about 11 nm off shore headed SW. I looked it up because these are the waters that I sail and I was curious as to where the wave would grow to the point it was impassable.
Here is a video of a Japanese CG ship that was 3 mi off shore when the tsunami hit. That would have put him in bout 300-400 ft of water. Granted it's a large boat but the wave is certainly doable with a smaller boat (you might have to change your shorts after seeing this come at you).
