so I'm looking at a boat with that has an Oman 6.5kw genset that is broken...... yard have a price to fix of $7,500 and owner said he will deduct that from final negatiated price. Googling I see a brand new "Phasor" Kubota based 6.5 for same price...... how much is installation?

We recently replace our genset and the labor portion was a bit over $1000. Labor is a function of mounting moreso than anything else

Fixing a deduction on a price yet to be determined seems to me there is no fixing at all. That discount will certainly influence the best price the seller is willing to offer. Just consider the boat as if it had a working genset and figure out what your best offer would be, then subtract $7,500 from it and that would give you a base to negotiate from.

I'm not familiar with the Phasor, but I'd put my money into the Onan. We run ours 3 hours a day/365 on average and it's still working OK at somewhere around 18,000 hours. Honestly, I will be looking to rebuild in the next year or two but hey, that's pretty good service out of a diesel generator.
However, I'd be interested to hear from any Phasor owners who use their generators in a liveaboard, on the hook application, with at least 3-5 thousand hours on them.

The Onan is in a lazarette correct? You should consider a sound enclosure that you can positive vent. $7500 won't get you the enclosure for a Phasor but the boat may have one for the Onan, making replacement attractive. At that price you could get the Next Gen 5500 watt all-up with enclosure. Smaller and also a Kubota/Newage Stamford system.

I have a Northern Lights 5kw with 3143 hours and I run it 24/7 when off the dock. Great generator for a 356. Make sure you get a 1800 RPM generator and more than one cylinder. The Northern Lights has 3 cylinders.
