so I finally got around this weekend to trying to start my Onan 5.5kw genset.all systems go, cranks but does not want to turn over. I bled at the injector still didn’t want to turn over.....
question- so when bought boat they said the electrical head was shot..... would this prevent the motor from turning over?
Thanks

If the genset engine is rotating, Generator head should not prevent cranking.

Glow plugs?

To start my Kohler 9kw, which uses a 16 hp Yanmar, I must push the STOP side, of the Toggle STOP/START switch to the ....

1) STOP side for 3 seconds to heat the glow plugs.
2) Then push the Start side.

Glow plugs are fused too. Blown fuse?
_______
Air Filter Plugged?

Remove the filter to try starting.

Our 8KW Onan Genset has three sensors; low oil pressure, high exhaust temp and high coolant temp. Either of these sensors detect a problem it will trip the Onan main breaker and shut the engine off. The engine will crank but not fire up until the problem is corrected and this main breaker reset.

The main breaker is located on the Onan control panel mounted by the generator. It is a very small red button in the center of a black plastic ring. Easy to miss, but try resetting this main breaker. It may have tripped for some reason, to be determined. Ours tripped because of high exhaust temp (no sea water flow) due to the skipper failing to get a good seal after cleaning the sea water strainer.

There is also an inline fuse that connects the starter switch to the starter solenoid. If that fuse blows, the engine will not crank when pressing the starter switch, but that does not seem to be the problem here.

You can test this by closing the engine kill solenoid that is mounted beneath the injector pump, then try starting the engine. It should fire up while you hold the solenoid closed and shut down once you release the solenoid to the open position.

Please let us know what you find out.

Before doing anything else I suggest you need to see if fuel is getting to the cylinders. In the manual, check for injector bleed procedure. On my generator, it requires loosening of a large nut on the injector, then you crank the engine and you should see a bit of fuel beneath the nut. If you follow that procedure and see no fuel, then the problem is fuel to the cylinders which could be caused by clogged filters, in-line shutoff, etc. Do the simple things first before taking anything apart. On my generator if one of the relays is open due to over temp the fuel solenoid is shut off so no fuel is getting to the cylinders. When you bled the cylinders did you see fuel?

Yes.... to bleed I went straight to the injectors cracked on at a time and bled... saw fuel in both

Normally no need to bleed these engines as they have an electric fuel pump.
First, there is a solenoid that must engage before the engine will start. If this solenoid doesn't engage (you should hear it go clack), the engine will turn over forever, but never start! This solenoid is what shuts down the engine should the safety systems activate. Therefore, if you have a fault in the safety systems it will not engage. You can wire it open during your attempts to start the gene, but never run the engine this way.
Absolutely a must to use the glow plugs EVERY single time you want to start the gene, unless it has been running for a while. That means between attempts to start it. Around 15 seconds should do, no more than 25, ever.
The electric fuel pump should make a clicking sound, but if it doesn't you can check if it is working by just pulling off the feed line to the injection pump for a second.
It would help a great deal if you knew the model#, such as MDKD. Also, many parts you need for the engine can be had from a Kubota dealer for a fraction of the cost from Onan, but you will need the parts books from both companies (available online free).
I just rebuilt my MDKD, having the generator end serviced and replacing the diesel engine. After a ton of research, I decided to rebuild rather than replace because nobody makes as good or as simple a generator today. A transformer and a bunch of relays, available at almost any auto parts store, are the whole control system. No massively expensive PC boards to fail.
Good luck.

It’s a 2005 MDKAU A 5.5kw..... this is what’s happpening. As soon as I release the start button she stops. The instructions say hold until green light..... if I hold all I get is amber flashing light then will turn off and flask “excess cranking”

You need fuel, air and glow plug.

Fuel ---- Check Done
Air ---- You should remove your air filter then start again
Glow Plugs... ?

OK, I'm sorry, but your unit and mine are worlds apart, except that yours looks to also be a Kubota engine. The info on the glow plugs may be accurate, though basically everything else I told you is not apropos. Sorry again.
This is the parts book for your engine: http://www.gemo-online.de/pdf/onan/MDKAU_parts.pdf. There should also be a parts book for the alternator end, and shop manuals for both. Onan parts are easily sourced in Mass from john.pennington@cummins.com. Kubota parts www.countrysalesandservice.com (again you need the Kubota parts book, but these folks will supply you with one), once you figure out which Kubota engine you have.
Again, good luck.
