genset noise

I just bought a 2001 hunter 380 with a genset northen light 5.5 kw installed by hunter. They installed it on the starboard locker where it is supposed to be. However they did not installed a noise reducing casing instead the tried to insulate the the walls of the locker. The results are a noisy monster that pruduce the same noise of the regular engine... It is impossible to consider sleeping with that thing running ! Does anyone has a recent genset that they bought from hunter with a noise reducing casing ? Is it noisy ? I saw a cruiser with a genset and a noise reducing casing ... It was very quiet... no comparison with mine !

Noise Level Question

Philippe,I wish I could help you. I have a 376 and I want to get a genset installed this year...I have been trying to find someone who has a generator installed...your boat is close to my design except your genset space is on the stern...I would have to install in the starboard lazarette. I have looked at Fischer Panda and Entec gensets...both have sound enclosures. The Hunter dealer near me installs Fischer Pandas. Fischer has noise levels up to about 66 decibels. Seems fairly quiet in operation on the boats I have seen but they were not installed in the lazarette of a 376 so I do not know how the noise levels would be in our boat. I do not know how that compares with your Northern Lights....I tried to look up their specs but they did not have any noise level specs listed on the web. If I get any information that might help you or find a 380 owner that has a genset installed, I will let you know. Grayson

I have a Fischer Panda mini 8 (7KW) installed in the starboard transom locker. Its right behind the rear state room. The sound enclosure is included with the Genset. The Marine Air A/C in the state room makes more noise than the genset. Have no idea how this compares to the northern genset installed by Hunter. Although we don't over night with the genset running, I know I have no problems getting my afternoon siesta with it running. Hope this helpsBryceS/V SpellbinderH410
