Glad you asked!
I’m glad you asked. I hope someone has a good answer. I have an older 36’ (Hull # 34) and would like to add a genset myself. For the 16,000 BTU A/C we will need at least a 3 Kilowatt system. A 2K set might get by but it would be under max load all the time. Fischer Panda makes the best, quietest gensets on the market – and they’re diesel! But they are expensive and very heavy. Were I to consider one of these I would take some of the space in the aft stateroom (our garage). They are water-cooled and the exhaust can be routed out with your power plant exhaust. I saw one at the South Hampton Boat Show a few years ago and you could hardly hear it. I also saw one being installed in a newly delivered 36 MkII. It was being installed under the seat in front of the sink. That’s where my fuel tank is located. A more economical solution would be a pair of Honda 2000 watt portables. They can be linked together to synchronize the voltage output. I’ve heard from a couple of others that they use a single 2000 to power a single “window unit” type A/C. You might be able to build a sealed box in the port lazarette and provide exhaust and cooling ports that would guarantee that no exhaust would enter the boat. I’m not sure if there’s enough room in the aft locker if you’re on an older C36 like mine. You might also add some soundproofing around the locker. As we only use the aft stateroom for storage, I am leaning toward modifying the rear of the engine compartment to take advantage of the existing ventilation and exhaust plumbing.
