My wife and I have had our C30 for four years. We are very happy with the boat and plan to move aboard in five or six years and cruise the East Coast and Caribbean. I am interested in opinions concerning the new small gensets (5kw. and smaller). My first choice on location would be the stbd. lazarette with the water heater. Insulation and dedicated ventilation have been considered. Opinions on A.C. systems, makes and sizes, would also be welcome. Our current Carry-On model seems sufficient on cooling ability but is not acceptable for our future plans. I work for Hatteras Yachts but since our installations are all Cruisair split systems I need advice on other brands that are on the market.

Merimaid

Two winters ago I put a 12000 BTU heat/cool unit in. I made the main salon into a "U" shape. The A/C sits under the newly created seat. The cushion that is normally in that position when it is a bed fits (with the same sanps) right in place. I have made a smaller table that fills up the space to make that bunk up. The table works fine. The noise is louder than I thought it would be, but is really like a white noise. It heats and cools the boat very well. I have an outlet in the bow berth, head, and Q-berth and two in the salon. When it is cool the whole boat is cool and when it is heating the whole boat is warm. Merimaid was great to work with, they exchanged some of the outlet faces for others and in general were easy to get hold of and work with. By the way, I operate the whole thing off of my standard 30 amp shore power and have never blown a circuit breaker

Also Mermaid

I installed a 12K BTU reverse cycle in the port side cockpit locker. Mounted it on a platform I made of 3/4" plywood. It sits down low so there really isn't a loss of storage as anything stored down that far is lost anyway. Never a problem in the 4th season now. Main outlet is in the galley next to the trash door. Two more in the head and the forward portion of the v berth. Air return is in the aft berth sidewall right at the unit. Cools and heats efficiently. Also found the folks at Mermaid to be helpful. I bought it at Defender.
