I recently added a roller furl with a 150 genoa and noticed improved upwind performance with the jib car moved all the way back on the track.Would there be an advantage to extending the track farther back since the original jib was smaller?DJ

Yes

I added a 155% Genoa to my O'Day 272 and added one foot of track to each side, this helps flatten the sail in a blow. The original tracks are probably to short but only you can tell that from the helm.

DJ The genoa is depowered by moving the track back in a blow and is what you want to do. Moving the track back DEPOWERS the sail by letting the leech of the sail at the top fall off, moving it forward POWERs UP the sail by tigtening the leech. The jib fairlad doesn't necessaryily flatten the sail, the tension on the jib sheets do that. The position of the fairlead car affects the shape of the foot and the leech. To answer your question, you need to determine how far back the track needs to be before you start pulling too far between the foot and the clew of the genoa. You could very well have it far back engough already that pulling it even further won't do anything more. If there''s more tension still required on the bottom of the sail when you have the fairlead as far back as it will now go, sure, extend the track.

It depends. The key is to matche the angle and location of your genoa sheet to the condition of the wind and water and angle of attck on the wind. You actuall need to move your genoa fairlead forward or back when you change your sail angle vs the wind. Good references can be found on some of the sail web sites and the catalina 22 web sites. Give them a view and lots of your questions will be answered.
