I want to add a genoa to my 80' O'day 23. What is the ideal size for this boat. It will be a hank on sail. Is a 150 overkill?

I have a "73 ODay 23, and use hank on headsails. It had a 150 Genoa from the previous owner, in addition to the standard working jib. I have used it frequently; it is definitely not overkill. It is the perfect headsail for light winds, and the boat responds very well.

I ordered a genoa for my Oday 23 last year. Previously I had a UK sail lent by a friend with a beneteau 23, and the boat was WOW!!! in 12 knots we were doing 7!! However it was a deck scrubber, mylar -- triradial. Hence when I ordered the roller furling sail I knew I would have to sacrifice the sail area a bit. I had a great talk with the guy at airforce sails, who designed the sail for mty purposes. I explained that I am primarily looking for a sail to fit the furler, and to give the boat a bit more speed than the stock sail. Tri-radial would be great I thought, since I had tried out the UK tri radial, and it was a huge success. Bill James (from Airforce sails) had a bunch of questions -- and based on the following, i decided to go with a 125%: I needed the furler primarily for the ability to reduce headsail quick and safe when single handing, from the cockpit. I wa splanning to do little sailing in the summer luls, and needed a goo dsail to serve spring and autumn. I am very pleased witht he design and construction, other than the spreaders and schrouds do chaffe a bit... Good luck. Reply to this post and include your e-mail if you need to contact me. Genoa addition
Thanks for the input. I have been thinking about adding a light air headsail since last season. A furling system was a consideration, but I'm not sure I want to step into that investment for this boat. I'm already suffering from footitist and find myself looking at 28's and 30 footers. I would guess that 50% of my sailing days were in light air conditions this season. I was envious of others who were far more efficient with their genoas while we ghosted along waiting for a puff to push us on. Just out of curiousity what would the recommended size be for a furling system on a 23?

Last season I bought a used Genoa that came out of a Oday 23 and I used it for my 25. But I wound up buying a Hood Sea flex so again I picked up a near new sail for the furler. The sail for the 23 is a light 160% that measures Luff 27’7” Leach 25’8” and foot 17’7”. She is great in light wind even on my 25 I can’t imagine on a 23. Look at picture my friend on the tiller My wife and his wife. I am on the other side of the viefinder. Of course the Genoa on the left.
