I am purchasing a new 155 Genoa but I have no idea how long the new sheets need to be. I own a '80 Catalina 25. Any information would be great!

How much, not what kind

Thanks for your reply. I can get all the line I need at our local sail shop. Yes Dorothy, there is a sail boat dealer in Kansas. I just wanna know how much to buy for the 150 Genoa.

If they're only for the genoa

they'd be shorter than for a 110, since the sail is bigger and closer to the winches. If you switch sheets between sails, don't make 'em too short for your smaller sail(s). The reference to West Marine is that they show you how long they should be, based on the shorter headsails. Your choice. You could also go to the Catalina 25 Association website: http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=3 and look up the manual for the boat which shows the length of the lines.

37.5 feet

1.5 times the length of the boat. It is the length needed for the lazy sheet that determines the number. When a 150 is sheeted in, the lazy sheet has to go forward from the clew, around the shrouds and mast, back through the sheet block, to the other winch with 3 turns and have a 3-5 foot tail. The bigger the sail, the longer the sheets need to be. 1.5 times the length of the boat has been the "standard" number since forever for sloops. Cutters need longer sheets since the lazy sheet must also go around the inner forestay also. 77 (an extra foot each for the bowline) feet of 3/8" double braid would be a good choice. 75 feet of 10mm Marlowbraid would be an upgrade (about 1/2 the stretch for less than 2 times the price).

Stu!

Stu, no ill will intended, but I think you may have mis-spoke(something I do sometimes)about the length of the genoa sheets. The larger the foresail, the longer the sheets need to be. On a 150 genoa, the clew comes farther back behind the mast than the clew of a 110 jib. Each sheet needs to be long enough to go from the clew, around the mast, and back to the winches and cleats, with enough extra length to provide a good handhold. For someone sailing with multiple headsails that wants to use the same set of sheets, they should measure their largest headsail. It would be a very expensive mistake to buy sheets that are too short.

OOPs - you're right, Mike,

I keep getting that backwards - measure thrice, cut 1/2! Thanks Stu

Whew!

Stu, Don't feel too bad. I am getting ready to replace my 110 with a 150 on a furler. I was thinking all I had to do was to measure the sheets on the 110 and buy new ones. Duh!!!! Since I have a 150 that is hanked on, I will measure them instead. "Measure with a micrometer and cut with a chainsaw."
