Genoa Jib

Happy Holidays to All is the first order of busines.

I am in the process of buying a new head sail and of course, my Vega
manual is on the boat two hours away.

Does any one have their manual home and would be willing to lookup
some information. Specifically, I was wondering how many Square
feet or Square meters the #1 Jib is? Also what was the weight of
the material.

The Vegabond is finally going to have roller furling and I am also
interested in what cut, weight of the sail cloth and Sq ft other
Vega's have for their furling jibs.

Thanks in advance,

Hello Jim, compliments of the season to you and yours.
I'm a very/very new Vega owner and, unfortunately, my copy of the
Vega handbook was taken off the web and has less than perfect
clarity; in other words, I can't read the numbers, etc., for sail
recommendations and sizes.
That said, V2947 has fairly new 'Banks' sails with a 110 foresail and
Harken furler reefing. My skipper for the Seattle/Powell River,BC
delivery a month ago is very experienced and was amazed at how well
the 110 (by itself) drove the boat at times during some (to me)
fairly tenuous seas (8')/winds (35+kt). He knew about Harken furling
('the best', in his words) but was a bit less enthusiastic about the
size/brand of sails. His enthusiasm for Harken was confirmed, his
opinion of Banks sails, and the 110 configuration was positively
altered by the end of the trip. He could see no reason for anything
bigger than a 110 and the furling takes her, of course, as small as
you want to go.
If you're interested in the setup details on V2947, I can take some
exact measurements, determine/find out fabric weight/etc. after the
holidays. I'm off to Alberta tomorrow to spend Xmas with our kids
and new grandaughter after whom V2947 is named, 'Cailyn Rose'.
All the best,
Geoff Warren

The number one jib is 145 sq ft. Dimensions are: luff =27' 6 3/4" leach=
24' 1 3/8" foot=12' 1 3/4" Cloth is 6 or 6.5 oz

I know you're going with roller furling, but for those who are not, I found
that a Catalina 25 110 jib is almost the same dimension (a few inches longer
in the foot and leach so maybe 160 sq ft). Check out Cruising Sails Direct
(a North Sails internet outlet) that stocks these with hanks for less than
$500. This is less than 2/3 the price of the quotes that I received for a
custom Vega sail with the above dimensions. Quality is excellent. I probably
wouldn't go to sea with this as the only headsail, but for normal 20 to 30 knot
winds it is just fine. It sure beats my old Ratsey and Lapthorn jib.

Happy Holidays to all of you! Lets hope that next year
(again) we all have at the least a hand of water under the
keel!

Hello Yim;

I have the original specs for the sails. I could scan the
specs (one sheet) and send it to your e-mail address. Let
me know if you want it.
