I am looking to buy a 150% or so Genoa for my Hunter 34 (equipped with roller furler). Based on the boat specs, looks like I need a sail with luff=46' and LP=~20'. Anyone have any recommendations on size, type or other issues (e.g. pointing ability, sail balance issues etc.).

h34 Genoa Advise

I've had an h34 for about 6 years. It came with a 110 jib. I got a deal on a used 150 the first year I got the boat. Works great in light air under 14 knots or so. Since this vessel is know to be tender that sail seems to big for the boat unless you sail in an area where there is usually light wind. My surveyor recommended that I did not go bigger than 135% on this boat. I plan on a new jib soon and it will be in the 125 -135% range. Barry s/v "PER DIEM too"

H34 - Genoa

I have had my H34 for about 15 months and am in the process of replacing the sails. The boat came with a 150 and a 110 roller furling jib. When I am out with my wife, grandkids, etc I use the 110. When I am racing I fly the 150. I just purchased (have not taken delivery yet) a new 155 and a new 110. I hope this improves my pointing ability. No amount of money or effort is too much for a 25 cent blue ribbon. My sail maker said "If I was not a die hard racer and didn't mind a little more weight at the top of the sail he could reinforce the head and leach so that I could roll the 155% down to 135% and the 110% down to 85%. He said if you roll the sails down any more than that you take a chance of stretching them depending on the wind strength. Since I have a deisel generator and an A/C unit onboard. I chose to have the head reinforced. Fair winds, Charlie

155%

We use to have several 34's in our area all of them used 155% head sails for racing and one of them even carried a 180%. On my old 31' the 155 made the difference between winning races and just showing up.

140 genoa

My 140 is due in in about 2 weeks from Cheung Lee Sails in Hong Kong. Email me back at jim.oursler@ericsson.com and I will advise the outcome. I talked a lot.. and all sailmakers advised 135 to 140 as with a larger sail one can not adequately roll down to a 100 and maintain any kind of pointing ability. Jim in Dallas.
