1993 Hunter 23.5.....Question,I sailed this past few days on local beaver lake under main sail only.In irons most of the last day...lol
I have a 110 genoa but due to single handed sailing. Im having trouble going foward to best the jib while trying to hold an windward course when I do have a good breeze.
Tying a line to metal tiller/ aft cleats dont give enough time.
There must be some advise this novice sailor would welcome. It would be nice if there was a way of tying/ holding down the foresail before hosting from the cockpit..?
Txs guys/gals...mark<><

Question two...previous owners has added a ten inch solid wire to base of jib where luff attached to aft hole of jib base plate. It appears it is used to hold jib sail off of deck due to a solar powered fan. Is there other reasons if anyone has seen this addition?
txs agaij in advance....mark<><

You can rig a downhaul for your jib, with a small block at the base of the forestay with a line run aft to the cockpit, run the line up with a clip to second to the top hank. It'll hold the sail down and you can use it to douse the sail, too. If you sail on port tack and then heave-to the jib will be backwinded on starboard so when you take it down it'll "automatically" flake itself.

Pat Royce's Sailing Illustrated, a neat little book, is one I would usggest you read.

The wire is called a pendant, and is used to also allow you visibility forward under the jib and get it as high as it can go.

What do you mean by "best the jib"???

Why not add lifeline netting to the bow pulpit and foredeck lifelines??

This might also be so that the jib hoists high enough to see under..

Route the halyard back to the cockpit.... and rig a jib downhaul, also routed back to the cockpit.... now everything can be done from there. Or sail with both sails, the way the boat was designed. You need the headsail to get you through a tack, that's why you're in irons all the time. If you're worried about being overpowered, reef the main at the dock and sail it with jib and reefed main. The boat will be more balanced which equals=== more fun.

If you're single handing, invest in a roller furler. Jib stays up all the time; all done from the cockpit!

Thank you guys for your input .It is very much appreciated.
The very first time I sailed my boat after purchase was caught in a 21 kts wind without knowing how to best/put in a reff on main sail...now I have taken time to know the proper reefing skills for my hunter. It has a very easy jeffy reff design.
The jib downhaul line is very good idea. The use of wire "pendant" is great.Thank you...mark<><
I'ts all good and sailing rules!
