I am thinking of installing a diesel generator in my Hunter 340. Has anybody done this, where is the best place to locate the generator?

Weight and noise

Hi Allan I have been playing around with the same idea for my Hunter 37. Some things I have found that need to be addressed: weight and balance; you need to consider that if you decided to put the genset in the bow that this might cause you to ride "bow-low" Same thing if you mount it toward the outside of the boat. You might have a list on the genset side. Soooo centerally located is prefered. noise: If you are going to have it running while you are sleeping (airconditioning?) you might not want it right behind a bulkhead next to your (or others) head. electrical access: Can you even run the power wires to the "best" location. space: Most commercial genset have a rollcage which could be removed if you are going to permanently mount it to the hull. Since the manufacture does not give dimentions without the rollcage you might need to take a trip to Home Depot to get some measurments to plan by. I personnaly think that using the boats engine and belting a generator head to it is the best all around option. A 30ish HP motor can EASILY handle a 10 kW generator head. 10 kW would allow you to run a full size stove, oven and AC all at the same time. This option is also has the advantage of using the existing fuel and fuel tank (no gas on board!) and being smaller overall. Bill Roosa
